Virginia University of Lynchburg

There are many pros and cons to the Doctor of Healthcare Administration program at the Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL). Overall I felt this was a solid program and the online cohort model plenty of opportunity for engagement with others. The strength of the program is the courses around leadership as this program could easily be rebranded as a health leadership degree. I think for an early careerist or somebody without an MHA, MPH, or MBA this is a big negative as having a better understanding of the operational aspects of an organization is something that is not covered in depth enough in my humble opinion at VUL. There is no thesis or doctoral study project but a research practicum experience that simulates steps for research and results in a capstone-like project. One of the biggest issues with VUL is that it's a small HBCU with limited resources. The DHA program has been a savior for the institution and growing pains are most evident in the administration of the program. Students don't get adequate communication from the school staff. The program requires an externship if a student has less than 90 units total beyond undergraduate levels as a requirement for degree completion. I didn't have to complete this but for those that did I noticed term after term many students complaining about lack of direction on this requirement. For the mid-career professional looking to complete a doctorate this program can be an option. However, I would advise those looking at teaching or early-career individuals with limited healthcare administration experience may want to consider other options. Also note this university is nationally accredited by TRACS but does not hold a regional accreditation (which might impact future teaching opportunities). Cost wise this is good value but the program again needs to expand its course offerings.
