FAQs About University of New Orleans

Is the University of New Orleans Online?

Yes, UNO is online, and it offers 11 online undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Many online undergraduate majors are in the liberal arts, including philosophy and English. Online graduate degrees include majors such as engineering management and higher education administration.

Is UNO a Good School?

Yes, UNO is considered a good school because it's accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, baccalaureate, master’s and doctorate degrees, and certificates. SACSCOS periodically reviews UNO’s business practices and academic programming before it renews and confers accreditation.

When a school receives accreditation, its financial policies are ethical, and the school consistently provides rigorous, high quality education. It also means you can transfer credits from one accredited school to another.

What Is UNO Known For?

UNO is known for being the first fully integrated public university in the South after opening in 1958. It brings together talent from all 64 Louisiana parishes, all 50 states, and over 130 countries. UNO’s student body is diverse, with less than half identifying as white based on College Scorecard data.

UNO is also known for its research activity. It’s one of only two universities in Louisiana classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Doctoral University with High Research Activity.

Though its student body is exceptionally diverse, UNO is not an HBCU. HBCUs — historically Black colleges and universities — are accredited institutions of higher learning with the principal mission of educating Black Americans as per the Higher Education Act of 1965.

  • 19 units of prerequisite high school courses
  • SAT or ACT scores
  • Official college transcripts, if transferring credits
