SU is best known for its affiliation with the United Methodist Church, and it's one of six higher education institutions of its kind within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Students can engage in several religious resources and programs — including mission trips and faith-based majors. Religion courses are not explicitly required for non-religious programs. However, SU's general education curriculum is based on seven domains that include options for spiritual and religious courses. 

Shenandoah has several campuses and an online school. Students who are local to Virginia may take advantage of SU's on-site programs, while remote students can study completely online from anywhere in the country. 

The National Center for Education Statistics shows that 35% of SU's undergraduate students take at least some online courses, while the same number of graduate students study exclusively online.

The admission requirements for applying to college at SU vary depending on what type of student is applying and what program they are applying for. For example, first-year nursing students must have a 3.0 GPA, while performing arts students are required to pass auditions and a portfolio review.
