FAQs About Old Dominion University

Is Old Dominion University Online?

ODU offers online degrees through ODU Global, which is the same as ODU. In other words, students can expect the same academic rigor and quality as on-campus programs. ODU offers over 40 bachelor's degrees online, including 27 full degrees. Additionally, all undergraduate options can be taken as degree completions for transfer students while all upper-division coursework is available online, and most general education and lower-division coursework. Students may be eligible to transfer up to 60 credits into these programs. However, they are required to complete a minimum of 30 credits at ODU to graduate from any program.

Are Online Degrees From Old Dominion University Legitimate?

Online degrees from ODU are legitimate because they are conferred from an accredited school. Importantly, OnlineU only includes accredited online schools on its site. ODU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, baccalaureate, master's and doctorate degrees, and certificates.

Accreditation is important because it shows that the school has undergone an extensive review process by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized agency that deems its accounting practices are ethical and its academic programs are high quality. This stamp of approval also means you can transfer credits from one accredited university to another.

What Is Old Dominion University Known For?

ODU considers itself a forward-focused public doctoral research university, and it hosts more than 24,000 students. ODU enriches the local community by contributing $2.6 billion annually to Virginia's economy. It also contributes to the national and global community through rigorous academic programming, partnerships, and civic engagement. ODU has earned an R1 research designation from the Carnegie Foundation.

ODU also considers itself a "safe space" for the LGBTQ community. Its Safe Space Committee works to reduce homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism within the ODU and broader community. The Committee offers several opportunities for students to become involved through Safe Space membership, supporting Gay Cultural Studies, and self-identifying as an ally or LGBTQ on the Committee's website.

Which Degrees at ODU Provide the Highest Earnings for Graduates?

According to College Scorecard's federal data, ODU's online bachelor's degrees in computer engineeringelectrical engineering, and computer science provide the highest earnings for graduates. Alumni earn median annual salaries of approximately $83,900, $74,900, and $73,900, respectively. Other high earning degrees include mechanical engineering and nursing, which pay over $68,000.

When answering this question, it may also be helpful to consider OnlineU's proprietary Salary Score, which ranks colleges by how much their alumni earn compared to graduates with the same degree from across the country. ODU has a bachelor's degree salary score of 46 out of 100 for bachelor's degrees, 50 for a master's program, and 33 for a doctorate.

How Difficult Is It To Get Into ODU?

Getting into ODU is almost guaranteed, as it accepts 95% of applicants. The college works hard to make applying or transferring seamless by connecting applicants with the ODU enrollment team consultants. However, ODU does require first-year applicants to submit entrance exams. ODU students generally have combined SAT scores between 960 and 1170 and ACT scores between 18 and 25.

What Are the Admission Requirements for ODU?

ODU's admission requirements are no different from any other college or university. However, applying to college requires thoughtful planning to ensure requirements are met and questions are answered succinctly.

Specifically, ODU's undergraduate applicants must submit the following:

  • A completed online application
  • A $50 application fee
  • Official high school or GED transcripts
  • Official college and/or military transcripts, if applicable
  • SAT/ACT scores (though admissions may waive this requirement for non-traditional first-year students, high school students in a college-preparatory program, or those with a minimum 3.3 GPA may waive this requirement)
  • An activity resume, letter(s) of recommendation, and a personal statement are optional but strongly encouraged

Degree: Political Science

I am pursuing a political science degree online. This degree is one of a few on ODU's course catalog that is advertised as being available 100% online. I am supposed to graduate in two semesters. None of the classes I need to complete my degree are made available for fully online students over the next two semesters. Therefore, I cannot graduate because of the university's own ineptitude. I work full time at a location hours away from the university. I do not have the option to attend classes in... Read More

Save your money and go to a better school. Classes you need are always full if they are even available. Advisors have bankers hours and are rarely available especially if you are a working adult. Instructors are luck of the draw, some are good, some mediocre, some are very poor. Have a backup plan because you will need it.

Absolute garbage experience. I decided to go into business marketing and the first issue I ran into is when I transferred over from a community college, and I sent my transcripts three times before the ODU office managed to get them put into the database so I could actually apply for my classes. I had to harass the offices in order to get anything moving. I have had a PLETHORA of issues at this school (not with the classes themselves, only the faculty). The faculty and staff that I have come across... Read More

Old Dominion does nothing to assist Adult Distance Learners. If you have an issue, please prepare to fight them and take your concerns to the top. They act like "just give us your money for your distant learning courseS and don't ask us for any help" I have experience this from my adviser and professors. I WILL NEVER ATTEND THIS SCHOOL AGAIN AFTER GRADUATION. THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY AND FOR YOU TO JUST SHUT AND DO BOTHER THEM. THERE IS NO SUPPORT FOR DISTANT LEARNER EVEN THOUGH THEY ACT LIKE IT... Attending Old Dominion University was quite the experience. My advisor was awesome - he was always readily available, and took an interest in me as a person, not just another student. I was an online student, so all of my courses were online. The professors are very knowledgeable in their chosen field, and provided me with invaluable feedback to help me grow personally and professionally. While some professors limited the amount of books for classes, or offered online articles so that students would... Read More

Let me preface that I attended ODU back in 2007. University was fine. Most of the courses were live-streamed. The coursework was suitable and expected for the educational level. The facilities were great, as were the helpful staff. Most of the instructors were fine and well-educated; there was one, n particular, I won't divulge his identity, but he is or was in the business department, was egotistical. He didn't help students with learning material. Overall, it's a fair university to attend but do... Read More

Old Dominion University was the perfect online school for me. Reasonable tuition and my community college had an agreement with them so the credits transferred without an issue. There is no requirement to have to be on campus at all. Now I am going to continue onto my Masters degree and the education I received there will be very beneficial.

There is a lot going on around campus. There are always events and activities in the area or even on campus. There is a vast sense of community and family. However, in the surrounding area there are some poor and crime filled neighborhoods. ODU does the best they can to upkeep the safety of students but it is still difficult. Most students live off campus, so using the buddy system of catching a ride is the best way to and from classes.

I had a wonderful learning experience at ODU. All of my professors were great and they took the time to work with all of their students one on one. I took all of my classes online and it felt as if I right there in the classroom. I plan on attending ODU for my Masters Degree in Mental Heath Counseling. I highly recommend ODU
