The Higher Education Act of 1965 identified HBCUs as "…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans… ." BSC was founded in 1895 as the Bluefield Colored Institute to provide higher education to the children of local African American coal miners. By the middle of the 20th century, it became a cultural hub, hosting poetry readings by Langston Hughes, musical performances by Count Basie and Duke Ellington, and boxing exhibitions with heavyweight champion Joe Lewis. In the later part of the century, BSC hosted poet, educator, and activist Maya Angelou.
