FAQs About Arizona State University

Is ASU Legit?

Yes, ASU is a legitimate university that is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, an institutional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If a school is accredited, it means the college and its programs have been evaluated and approved by an independent group to ensure students are getting a high quality education.

We only list accredited colleges and universities on OnlineU to help students find quality online education options.

Many students want to know if online colleges are legitimate in part because of diploma mills, which are scam colleges that pose as online and campus-based schools. Some students also might wonder about the legitimacy of an online college because of a lingering stigma against online schools. Fortunately for today's college students, online programs can be found at widely respected colleges and universities across the country — even Harvard University offers classes online.

What Is ASU Known For?

Innovation

ASU has been widely recognized as a leader in education innovation, especially for its digital learning programs. EdPlus is a department of ASU focused on making college more accessible for students by creating better online degree programs, partnering with companies to offer education benefits for employees, offering virtual reality biology labs, and other innovations in digital learning.

Inclusion

The university focuses on being accessible and inclusive for students, especially through ASU Online. EdPlus has focused on reducing barriers to student success and reaching more potential students. They've done this through various initiatives, such as risk-free online college classes, which students only pay for if they pass and want credit; professional development classes for adults looking to boost their skills; and education programs for underserved communities globally.

Growth

Over the last ten years, ASU has continued to offer more and more degree programs in person and online. As the university focused on growing its majors, boosting student success, and removing barriers for students in college, it grew enrollment from 11,500 to more than 63,000 students since 2013. Today, ASU has more than 200 online degree programs and works with over 30,000 online students.

Education Majors

ASU Online is a top school for online bachelor's degrees in education, and ranks #7 for online education degrees with the highest return on investment. Federal data from College Scorecard shows that ASU Online is most popular for psychology, communications, and business majors.

What Are the Career Outcomes and Top Employers for ASU?

Data from the labor market analytics company, Lightcast, shows that top employers for ASU graduates over the last five years include the university itself; Starbucks; tech giants Amazon, Microsoft, Intel, and Apple; Banner Health system; the Air Force; and the manufacturing companies, Northrop Grumman and Boeing.

Career outcomes depend on what kind of degree and major students choose. The number one most popular industry for ASU graduates is education, according to Lightcast data, with 15% of graduates working for an education employer. Manufacturing, finance and insurance, and retail trade are also top industries for recent graduates.

Undergraduate students with associate and bachelor's degrees from ASU most often work in software engineering, sales, and management jobs.

The most popular jobs for graduate students who earned master's and doctoral degrees from ASU are software engineers, researchers, college professors, behavior analysts, and business analysts.

How Difficult Is It To Get Into ASU?

ASU Online has an acceptance rate of 73%, meaning three out of four students who apply get in. This is significantly higher than many other colleges, many of which primarily serve students who are recent high school graduates. It's also important to note that online schools tend to serve more adult learners, many of whom are returning to school after a long break. Overall, applicants to ASU Online likely have a good chance of getting in.

I think as others have mentioned, if you're looking to really LEARN stuff, you're probably better off seeking out YouTube videos or Udemy classes. If what you seek is a diploma or certificate, then you can pay $1500 per course and get it if you're willing to work through the poorly written assignments, poorly edited lecture videos, and overly pedantic test questions. I was hoping for something approaching my experience as an in-person undergraduate at a different state school, however these classes... Read More

A lot of very archaic and cheap courses of low quality for online classes. I've had a terrible experience and am on the verge of changing schools. Go anywhere else where they might value you as a student. I had one math class that had literally over 1,000 errors/typos and issues. When I asked for a refund for that course I was told to suck it up.

This was the email I sent describing my situation, trying to request a partial refund. The school lost my transfer credits and was not helpful at all. And they did not refund me a damn thing! 09/10/2022 To whom it may concern, I am writing to let you know that I have had a horrible experience here at ASU. I took college classes in person at Stark State College here in Ohio from 2005 to 2009 and obtained 2 associates degrees in Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Design Engineering. About 3 or... Excellent initial instruction. Incisive and historically based under luminaries such as Robert Citano. These first 12 hours are followed deviation into "memory, memorials and monuments," less than compelling "electives" and revisions of papers that were irrelevant the first time they were assigned and remain so thereafter. The second half of the program is supervised by junior professors who lack compassion and substantive ability to motivate. I deeply regret my decision to attend this school.

ASU online is a joke. I am currently in the MA in Communication program and there is horrible communication . The professors give very little constructive feedback and the TA’s are useless. I was told this is a go at your own pace degree program that is not true. It’s accelerated and we are doing a full semester’s worth of work in 4-7 weeks depending on the class. I work part time and many other students work full time and/or have families. The structure of the program and professors do not take... Read More

I loved my time at Arizona State online! I transferred in as a Junior (went to college right out of high school, never finished) and finished in four semesters. The quality of education was superb; the curriculum and professors are the same as for on-campus students. ASUOnline is more traditional than some other online programs; expect quizzes, tests, papers, lectures, exams, etc. (although all asynchronous). Most of the classes were organized extremely well for the online format; just be prepared... Read More

You’ll get a degree, but you probably won’t learn anything. Online “classes” consist of old PowerPoints, poorly formatted quizzes, and grading without actionable feedback. You’ll have to teach yourself whatever it is you want to know with nearly 0 input from instructors. Save your money and hit up WGU instead.

This is a higher education "turn'em and burn'em" scheme. They churn out graduates offering substandard, inconsistent, and, at times, incomprehensible education. The course and loan structure is somewhere between financial entrapment and a bait-and-switch. The whole program is horribly misleading. They talk a good game but fail to deliver. Point out obvious course design flaws... it falls on deaf ears with program administrators that are ready with excuses. Courses with professors consistently ranked... Read More

If you are going in person, from what I hear from others this can be an amazing school, if it is online, just run. You are not a priority, you are not taught, you are handed a book and basically told good luck. The amount of run around you must perform to get questions answered, with the unrealistic expectations laid out for timelines is ridiculous. Most people online are working and going to school. I received an online Masters Degree from ASU. I do believe that you will most likely have a good experience if you attend in person. However, they treat their online students terribly. I was never able to get a meeting with an advisor because they only make themselves available for students who attend in person. I did not get the experience I was hoping for.
