I could not have asked for a better undergraduate experience. I am currently a clinical research assistant at an R1 university and I could not have landed this job without the opportunities that Virginia Tech gave to me. I felt so welcome and free to explore my interests. I met close friends there and my life partner. The academics and overall school culture were the perfect fit for me. A majority of professors in Engineering, Science, and Math were apathetic and did not cover course material well. We were told to purchase textbooks that often did not cover the course material. In many classes, the first test would not take place before the drop/add period. I felt that we were expected to know material that was neither covered in class or in the textbooks. Professors would not show up for office hours or other appointments. My car was towed on multiple occasions, because they didn't... Read More inform us about football games or provide adequate parking signs, and the tow companies were "on the take". I felt socially isolated. In general, unless you already learned everything in prep school, avoid going here for STEM, because you won't learn anything.

I love Virginia Tech. It is so diverse and everyone feels accepted and at home. In my degree program, Agricultural Sciences, as a future agricultural educator, I don't believe Virginia Tech is the best place to go. Most colleges have a major specifically for agricultural education/future educators, but Virginia Tech doesn't. I first saw Virginia Tech -- Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University aka VPI -- in a book on colleges. They had the right mix of science and engineering degrees for whatever I wanted to study. I next saw it while dropping off my brother at college. The campus was beautiful. Third time was during freshman orientation, and then for real on move-in day. I'd attended a good high school, but Tech was more than I'd ever imagined. The campus scenery, extracurricular activities, all great! I was having fun, to be sure, but I was there to get a degree, and did just that. Along the way I learned hard work, teamwork, and leadership -- three important aspects of any career. I highly recommend Virginia Tech! It's a big school, but with a moderate campus and a decided home-town feel. Top-notch engineering and sciences. Great business school. Well worth a serious look.

The college was beautiful and the program amazing. I found the instructors to be very helpful and willing to meet during office hours if additional help was needed. I had opportunities at Virginia Tech that I would not have had at other schools. If I could change anything from my undergraduate time, I wish I would have stressed a little less about grades (though they are important) and enjoyed the moment. I wish I would have known how lucky I was to be there while I was there. Those years and experiences flew by so fast that I feel like it was just a breeze blowing by. Life is short. My advice it to use the college opportunity to not only learn your academic profession, but build life long relationship, explore your dreams, try new things, and don't be afraid to go out on your own. This is one of the best times of my life. Virginia Tech is an absolutely inspiring campus full of opportunities beyond anything I could have imagined. I even took a couple classes in horse-back riding while I was there since it was something I always had wanted to do and we could never afford it growing up. Virginia Tech is a magical place. One if not the most beautiful campus in the country, instills a great sense of pride as soon as you step foot on campus. The world renowned teaching staff is incredibly knowledgeable and very up to the times on technologies and trends in the work place market. They are very in tune with what is going on in the world. Virginia Tech is a great school for high school seniors and juniors to think about applying and enrolling. First, don't automatically put off the school because you think it only specializes in tech programs and it is out in the middle of nowhere. Even though, the latter is correct, VT has a student body of 25,000. You won't know that you're in Blacksburg until you step off the campus. Read More meet many people from all across Virginia seeing as it's an public institution and receives the majority of its applicants from Virginia but you will also find students that are from other Mid-Atlantic states as well. You will certainly have a very collegiate lifestyle with the hundreds of student organizations and clubs to meet people with similar interest as you. Also, going to football games will be one of your daily Saturday activities or if you're lucky a Thursday night game to kick off the weekend. One of the other things that are amazing about the school are the food options. I think the school was smart and thought ahead to make sure that although you are out in the valley of VA (4 hours from DC) you certainly won't suffer from the lack of food choices. People are genuinely jealous of the options for the food we have there. Likewise, watch your budget when it comes to the food plan or it will sneak up on you in the middle of the semester that you'll have to chill with West End! You'll have plenty of study abroad opportunities. As far as career opportunities a lot of firms from all over come to recruit and all you have to do is maintain a solid GPA. I'd highly recommend VT.
