University of Wisconsin - Parkside

Independent studies are offered for undergraduates interested in the Psychological Sciences. Unfortunately there are no distinctions in the degree, such as Counseling Psychology, Forensic Psychology, etc. At UW-Parkside many students have the opportunity to work on campus to pay for tuition. This school offers many options for career advancement and advising as well.

Pros: grad program is more affordable than other options, the branding is excellent, and the flexibility of online education is good. Cons: admin is terrible, the website is intentionally difficult for financial payment, course evaluations, etc. Instruction level varies course to course: some instructors add tremendous insight and value- often in qualitative courses; quantitative courses, not so much: there tends to be 'absentee instruction' which is a disservice and non-value add to the academic... Wow. Where to start? Major- My advisor doesn't even have a degree anywhere related to the major he advises for and has a bias when it comes to cultures and continents. It's an International Studies major but he doesn't like European culture and called Asian culture not interesting. He also doesn't care about his students graduating and is awful when it comes to email. Housing- I lived in Ranger hall and it was ok. The showers are extremely cold and you rarely get hot water (unless winter break or... Read More shower at 1am). During summer they only have the Apartments open for summer housing. The Apartments do not have AC in the bedrooms, only one AC in the living room. This is a terrible design and idea for multiple reasons. 1. They give you a key to lock your door in order to say they are not at fault if someone steals from you (cause you should have locked the door) BUT you need the door open to let the AC in or sleep in 30 degrees C in July and wake up from heat exhaustion. 2. Sexual assault, if you leave your door open at night while you sleep to stay cool, there's no rule about your roommate bringing a bunch of guys over and getting drunk as they are all 21 . I would not be surprised if most of our sexual assault stats are based on this. ALSO, living with roommates in the apartment you share the living room and kitchen. One roommate left a bunch of trash and housing told the roommates that are still living there (me) to take her trash out. But when my Chinese friend left trash (she didn't her roommate did) they charged her. So housing is a bit racist honestly. I also talked to housing about the AC issue and they told me to get a fan. I have 2 fans and still wake up in sweat. Also, 500 dollars a month for summer housing with no bedroom AC and no dish washer? Not worth it. Dining hall- Food is often gross and the cooks often under cook french fries, how? I know Parkside is cheaper but it's not worth it. Go to Lacrosse or Milwaukee. If you do go to Parkside, avoid Housing and do a different major than I did. I take a lot of English classes here as I'm an English minor and the English department is amazing. I'm a senior now but if I could switch majors I'd be an English major.

Parkside was a great school that I attended from 2009 to 2012. I was in the Student Support Services program in college and those advisors helped me so much with my college career. My own advisor sat with me and talked with me about not only class problems but life as well. Without her help, I wouldn't have been able to graduate a semester early. We had a meeting every 2 weeks with our advisor and I was forever grateful for those meetings because I knew who my advisor was. I didn't feel like I was... Read More a number but more a person when I met with my advisor. My advisors also helped me fill out my FASFA every year for the following year. I was truly grateful for this program because I would have been lost without this program. It always felt like I had someone to cheer me on and I needed that being on my own, without my friends I went to high school with. They helped me prepare for the real world more so than most of my professors did. Parkside as a whole was very small and a close net school. I enjoyed the smaller school because it was easier to get around. I didn't have to walk a mile or two just to get to one class. There was also a lot of clubs and activities to choose from. Although I didn't participate in a lot of the activities or clubs, I still noticed there was a lot to choose from. Parkside is a good school to live on campus or just to commute. I chose to commute because I worked a lot of hours at the local hospital and I just felt like I wasn't ready to be on my own yet. Overall, if Parkside had more graduate programs and more online degrees, I wouldn't mind going back to Parkside. I really did enjoy my time there and it was a great experience.

I double majored in math and Spanish in order to be able to teach. The rigor was where it needed to be in order to keep students on their toes, learning, engaged, and accountable. I loved how small the classes were so that we were on first name basis with not only classmates, but also with the professor. I was able to have my Spanish thesis published after my Advisor reviewed it. My experience was great and awarded me opportunities to help others. When I reflect back on my four years at UWP, I am filled with happy memories that make me happy I chose Parkside as my University.
