University of Utah

I really enjoyed my time at the University of Utah. The Business program was fantastic. From the professors, challenging courses, and high standards, it really made my degree feel meaningful and hard-earned. The academics overall were great.

A few downsides I had: the school is very expensive, even for in-state tuition. Commuting from off-campus was stressful at times and required planning ahead to avoid traffic and construction. I believe it's the best University in Utah.

My university experience at the University of Utah was phenomenal! I truly enjoyed getting to know my professors, fellow students, and the resources on campus. When I began my master's degree, I was 6 months pregnant and determined to get through, but had no clue what was coming. I almost gave up multiple times, but with the support of the university programs, my professors, and the staff within my department, I was able to graduate and get my master's thesis research published in a prestigious journal.... I attended the University of Utah for my undergraduate and graduate degrees, and overall, it was a very positive experience. The campus is beautiful year-round, especially in the fall with the mountains as a backdrop. Academically, I found the faculty to be strong in my major (accounting). Research opportunities were abundant, and I appreciated the university’s emphasis on undergraduate involvement in labs. The student body was more diverse than I expected for the region, though I would have liked to see stronger support systems for first-generation and out-of-state students. If you're into skiing or the outdoors, it's hard to beat. The cost of attendance was reasonable, especially with scholarships, but housing in the area has become increasingly expensive. I’d recommend it to students who are motivated and want a solid academic experience in a vibrant metro area with access to nature.

This university uses every opportunity to charge you more money. The parking passes this semester are $194, and its only getting more expensive. They also use every opportunity to talk about how eco-friendly they are, how they value diversity, and how they have so many resources. They are not these things. The only people that can afford to go here anymore are those that have everything paid for by their parents. Rent at the U and by the U is ridiculous. It is at least $700 a month not including... Read More utilities. You have to work in order to afford anything. I am currently working 4 part-time jobs to go to this stupid school. The professors don't care about you, especially in STEM degrees. All the class sizes are huge. The tutors don't know how to help, the TAs don't help. Do not come here.

I highly recommend NOT attending the University of Utah's College of Architecture and Planning program. It is a complete mess and the only consistent thing about the college is that it is consistently inconsistent. Do to their lack of organization we have retaken several classes primarily their Building Tech class and Professional Practice class. They are very unsure of what to teach us and very little of what they have taught us is applicable to the real world. They pride themselves on their Design... Read More Build programs for their grad student but they are in complete shambles. Design Build Salt Lake has completely tanked and no longer exists. Design Build Bluff exists but is unorganized. For all their grad students who enrolled for Design Build Salt Lake, they have them designing and fabricating pendant lights, chairs, and an outhouse for Bluff. They had lied to us about Design Build Salt Lake, stating that we would be building an ADU for the homeless only to discover 2/3 of they way through our first semester of grad school that Design Build Salt Lake no longer existed. They new Design Build Salt Lake would no longer exist yet they lied to us all in hope that we would apply to their program. There has also been overwhelming evidence of mishandling of funds, and when they overcharged us for a semester and we complained about it they quickly edit the total course credit hours for the semester from 12 to 16. It wasn't even 12 credit hours.

The first year has better professors than second year. But the full year of “Macro” and “Reflexive” classes are absolute jokes. I wish I had done a different program focused on actual mental health care techniques. Most of the professors are abysmal. There are some gold nuggets: Landward, Gringeri, Bettman-Schaefer for DSM, O’Connor, Lundahl. I am in second year and all the new profs they hired seem like they have no idea what they’re doing. Some have no class structure and just expect an “open dialogue”... Read More for 3 hours. Extremely easy As. Not what anyone expects from grad school. Shame. Go elsewhere.

The University of Utah is a good school. There are politics involved in some of the departments, like the engineering department. I don't know much about this but my husband graduated from the EE program and spoke about this. He feels like overall it was a good EE program to attend.
My human development and family studies program had a fantastic academic advisor that really helped you figure out your plan. The teachers at UofU can lean on the liberal side especially in their teaching. However, my... Read More experienced showed me that the teachers in my department were very unbiased in their grading. The content was highly interesting and well taught by knowledgable professors.
I would recommend my program to anyone wanting to pursue such a path.

If I had anything to complain about it would be parking and safety.
The parking at the school has been terrible for years. I do know they recently built a parking garage but there is minimal parking and the cost for a pass is astronomical. I do appreciate the free use of public transportation but some times it's not an option.

Safety has come into question recently because of the death of a student. However, this has been a concern for me for years because many women were sexually assaulted in the stadium parking in broad daylight. The UofU needs to take bigger steps in making their students safer.
