University of Miami

The University of Miami was a great experience for me, and I'd recommend it fully if not for one big thing that one should consider, that being the extremely high tuition costs. The atmosphere and academics are great, with the school having several world class professors and it being located in sunny Coral Gables, Florida, and spending time there was a joy but if I hadn't been given a very large scholarship this would not have been realistic for me as it would've put me into deep debt. The University of Miami was a great place to be at because of its beautiful, vibrant campus that pushes you to be outside whenever possible and the school spirit is amazing. The athletics are a huge part of the identity and luckily they have some great teams from the football team to the volleyball team. I’m only writing this in the hope that I can help someone not hate a substantial part of two years of their life like I did going through The University of Miami Online MBA program. This program charges a lot of money. Yet, all of the course material is 10 years old. The courses are never updated. The effort put into this is none. Like some test questions are blank- you just have to pick A,B,C,D. I brought it up, and a student behind me also received a blank question. The professors don’t respond... Read More to emails for days or at all. When they grade a paper, it will be after the next assignment is due. You can’t fix anything based on the last grade. This makes sense because they only give you a 90/100 or whatever. No explanation. They have no integrity. What is the morality in trapping someone into a program? You can’t transfer all your credits to a new program. Considering time and money, students aren’t going to transfer to a new program. I thought about it, but the costs were too high. So, we all just finished, even though Pretty much everyone I know thinks the program sucks. You get more attentiveness and quality from elementary school teachers. If you are thinking about this program, run!!! Run as fast as you can somewhere else. Anywhere. My only other suggestion would to be pick some place close to you. At least you’ll be able to drive to the teachers office when they don’t return your emails.

Speaking specifically about my department... I would say that the academics were subpar and not worth the money that you pay for tuition. Two of my professors were good researchers but poor teachers. NO engaging discussions. I wouldn't even call it a lectures. Not sure what my professors were doing but often times I sat in class wondering if the President of the University was aware of the low quality of education and teaching in my class. It's outrageous how international students are not provided a lot support within the community. My department had difficulties understanding the procedures for I20 which ended up causing me a lot of grief. Don't expect a lot of support from the school if you are experiencing difficulties adjusting to the area. You're not going to get it. The school will take your money and then will have nothing to do with you once you've paid your tuition. In terms of the community: Unsafe. High car accident fatalities. When you drive along the US 1 to school, you will see the many flowers/ or wreaths planted along the roadway in memory of people who have died in car accidents. Expect to at least get into one car accident or two a year. I was in two car accidents. The first accident was on campus by a person texting and driving. Expect at least one murder in the area. And I say 'at least.' An international student who lived in the apartments very close to the university was robbed and stabbed to death in his home. Miami is unsafe period. Do not trust their off-campus housing website. I had the unfortunate experience of renting from a landlord who posted a listing on the UM website. This person ended up being a drug user and scam artist. Yes, I lost some of my rental deposit when I had to move and after I found out she was a scammer and a thief. UM does not take any responsibility or filter who or what posts housing listing on their website. So again, unsafe. In terms of the community... If you are not bilingual or speak Spanish... Good luck. Moved to Miami and found it difficult to even go into stores. Sometimes store associates were not able to help me when I needed assistance because often times I was told in English that they didn't speak English. Same thing with uber. Many times had to take an Uber to school or out in the community and sometimes only got Spanish Speaking drivers. I will say that the campus is beautiful but not worth the headache of attending the university. There are so many better universities that you can attend and it's not the University of Miami.

I loved the University of Miami because not only is the campus absolutely gorgeous, but as a student you are constantly surrounded by other like- minded intelligent individuals. The professors are typically top notch as well! As a low-income student, it may feel like you don't fit in at times or like you can't afford the luxuries that other students can afford. The adversity makes the experience so much more humbling and it pushes you to be the best you can be in life. The night life in Miami is... My years under the Psychology and Sociology department (double major) allowed me for many years to work in various professions. The foundation UM gave me allowed me to help individuals with drugs and alcohol as well as family violence. The University of Miami offers a lot of interesting classes and my two programs - International Studies and Geography (these are seperate departments; I double-majored) - provided me with incredibly talented and experienced professors and like-minded peers who shared a lot of my interests and who I learned with and learned from. It's walking distance to the metrorail which can take you to various parts of Miami. In general, the University of Miami is a tremendous schoool but as with any experience, you get what you put in, so be sure to take advantage of all the great resources and learning opportuntities that are offered.

School of Communications MFA degree program in Motion Pictures does not live up to its claims. If you are looking for a cinematography track youre out of luck. Production classes are like minor reviews and then youre out on your own to learn. The department boasts a well rounded opportunity to learn all aspects of film making. This claim falls short. Professors are not well rounded in worldly career pursuits but rather sit comfortably in their tenure and it shows. The department focuses more on script... Read More writing than actual production. Equipment for film making is good although it lacks proper maintenance and a lot of it needs repair. Too expensive of a school for what they offer. Look elsewhere!

The admissions office staff were more than helpful, as well as the academic advisers. The VA department is exceptional in the way they handle veterans benefits. The instruction is top notch with many of the professors, writing the books that are used in the courses. Above all, even as an online student, I've always felt as being part of the student body and not just a tuition check. I love UM!
