University of Arkansas at Little Rock

My time at UALR was a fairly good experience and I learned more than enough life skills as well as the educational requirements for my degree. Every professor I had was strict but also very understanding and were always there to help. My advisor from the history department gave me great guidance when selecting classes and I would have been lost without him. The community events were my favorite parts of my attendance. Avoid the mechanical engineering technology department like the plague. It's still a little challenging and you learn a lot, however, the degree is essentially useless and they don't tell you that while your in. Either go for real engineering or just get a trade certification. I'm going back for a whole second bachelors because in actual mechanical engineering after I'm done, so learn from my mistakes. Read More short bus version of engineering, they take it slow and you actually learn it really well. I was helping systems engineering students with their homework sometimes, because their professors teach so fast they can't retain the material. Also, if you have a hard time deciphering accents you'll definitely have a hard time, because basically every teacher is from another country.

The Learning Systems Technology program had been going through several changes when I had completed it. For years, they did not have a full time graduate coordinator running the program after the previous one had retired. I took a four year hiatus from grad school and when I returned the program was still in its original state. However, while I was completing the program, changes to revamp the program and hire a graduate coordinator to run the program full time were underway. By the time I graduated,... Read More the old program that I had completed my program through had been replaced with the new program and a new coordinator was running it. However, he only stayed for a year and left. They just recently hired a new person for that program although I have not met him. Currently, I am working as a Project Program Specialist for University of Arkansas at Little Rock TRIO Pre-College Programs and I have implemented some of the tools and resources from the Masters program which included created an e-course program to help clients in remedial mathematics courses. However, I am saving most of those skill towards the e-commerce business I am launching soon. Overall, the Learning Systems Technology program was a good program and while I do not know the status of it now after all of the changes, I am hoping others who complete the program will have success in their future careers.

UALR is a great school. I am pursuing my Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies focusing on English and History. I graduated with my Bachelor's in 2015, and got a job at National Park College in Hot Springs an the Career Services Center 6 months after graduation. I hope to be a college English teacher, and teachers and admissions faculty are great with helping students pursue their goals. The campus is also an ultimate place to meet new friends. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) is a good choice for traditional and non-traditional students alike. The campus offers a lot of diversity and opportunities to learn about other cultures thanks to the fairly large population of students from other countries. As a student at UALR you have opportunities to enjoy the arts: campus galleries, music and dance performances from students and professionals, and a community chorus. The cost of attending UALR is lower than other regional schools and there are many opportunities for financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants and work study.

UALR offers affordable degrees, a convenient location in Central Arkansas, and plenty of extracurricular opportunities to learn about the community and world around us. For the most part, I found my professors to be easy to access with questions. My academic adviser was insightful and helped me course a path to finish my degree. My undergraduate work at UALR was pretty amazing and easy. The English department is thorough and helpful. In my graduate studies, it has been horrible. I am on an ALP at my job in which I have 3 years to obtain my master's degree and the dean of special education at UALR advised me to take 4 classes to finish my degree. (I already have an all but thesis master's degree so I figured she moved classes around to get my certification). I was about to graduate this semester and all of a sudden was told... Read More I have 5 more classes to take in 2 semesters! All I got was "it was our fault, sorry, here is a $1200 scholarship to keep your mouth shut". Well, guess what, I can't afford to take 5 more classes since I pay out of pocket for each class. There is less than 8 students in the whole special ed department and 2-3 instructors. I've learned more at my job then at this college. It has been horrible and I may lose my job next semester if I don't come up with the money to pay for my classes left.
