Southeast Missouri State University

I attended Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, where I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree (Social Work) and graduated in December 2011. My experience was wonderful during the four years I attended. The campus felt welcoming, and it was a place where I was able to grow both personally and professionally. In addition to obtaining my degree, I was also a student worker on campus which was a way I could get extra income while there.

One of the best parts of my experience was the... Read More professors. They were knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely cared about their students’ success. In the social work program, I felt like the faculty were truly invested in helping us not only understand the material but also prepare for real-world situations in the field.
I also built some of my closest, lifelong friendships during my time there. The environment made it easy to connect with others, and being surrounded by people with similar goals and interests made the experience even more meaningful. Those relationships have stayed with me long after graduation.

Looking back, I’m really grateful for my time at SEMO. It gave me a strong foundation for my career and helped shape who I am today. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone considering a degree in social work or looking for a supportive and engaging college experience.

Run don’t walk to Mizzou You will have more class options, better instructors and real career options. SEMO is a really expensive community college with athletes. Don’t waste your money or your time. If I could give back my diploma for a refund I would. This University is a rip off and they know it. So much money wasted on U studies. No where to park. Poor career advisement. Rude staff. They were constantly on the lookout for scholarships, internships, and jobs that they thought would be perfect for me. This prepared me for graduate school and future jobs. Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) was a really interesting experience for me. As I am sure a lot of are, I remember being so nervous to step into this new journey and being on my own for the first time. I also had the pressure of being the first person in my immediate family to attend college so they were unable to provide me any advice or support regarding this matter.

SEMO made this transition so easy and seemingly effortless. They organized many activities to keep you moving in the right... Read More direction without feeling overwhelmed. Some of these activities included registering for your first semester classes, orientation, obtaining your student ID, and campus resources. The campus is fairly small but mostly everyone is inviting and you can very easily find our own community to be exclusive with. SEMO is a great place to go if you would like a small town with big pride and support.

This program was taught by instructors who were both knowledgeable and caring. I was fortunate to be a part of the 2nd Degree Accelerated BSN program and would recommend that track to others (if it is still available). The format of the program provided both strong didactic and clinical components covering a variety of content areas and clinical settings. The business school at SEMO is very average compared to top-tier universities. Because the school is in a rural area, they do not have a lot of partnerships with companies for internships and job opportunities. In addition, the course work is very text-book focused instead of practical with consultant projects and bootcamps. The social work program at SEMO was wonderful while I was in it. The staff were friendly and eager to help you in any way that they could. Over the last few years however, there have been several faculty changes and the program isn't what it was when I first was accepted into the department in 2015. My field placement taught me a lot and I wouldn't be able to succeed in my job now (that I landed two weeks after graduation) without the lessons I had learned in field and in classes. If it's something you feel called to do, DO IT. Don't let a professor dissuade you from something you feel passionate about!

I was grateful for the help of the team in the counseling program at SEMO because it seemed that my life was never concrete enough at any given moment to be confident in my decision. I applied twice, only to drop the first time. When I decided to return, the faculty was welcoming and expressed their true excitement that I was making my way back to the program. I was stick between school counseling and mental health counseling, and they spent numerous hours explaining the benefits of each career path... Read More to me. They've offered countless bits of advice, referred me to services that can further assist me, and even paired me with other students in the program to gain other perspectives. The faculty can be reached almost 24/7, and truly goes above and beyond to help their students reach success. I consider them to be great friends, not only great educators.

This school is great for a bachelor's degree. The tuition is not that high at all and there are plenty of scholarships out there to apply for. The school is very diverse because there is a huge international student population. The classes are anywhere from small to medium size. The majority of the teachers in the English department are very passionate and interested in their student's success. The campus has so many hills so the geography is not the best unless you want a workout every day. Not much to do on the outside of campus but plenty of things to get involved in on campus.
