Salem College

I went to Salem College during a time of some turmoil, as there were many protests regarding administrative policies, housing conditions, etc. While I do not believe the administration handled it especially well, the movement itself was a testament to the tight-knit community within the student body, which was especially notable in such a small school. The community there was highly diverse, and the representation (race, sexuality etc.) was especially evident in the classroom and made for much more... I studied biology, and the department was phenomenal considering their limited funding (especially evident in all science departments). I still maintain a close connection with my advisor and other faculty members. Since the college is located so close to Wake Forest, it is easy to attend events over there or get involved with their clubs/organizations. Sometimes they bring in speakers - I even went to see Chelsea Clinton speak there when Hillary was running. Additionally, you are offered the option to cross-register for courses over at WFU if they are not offered at Salem, which expands the list of potential courses one can take. While the college is small, housing is not particularly impressive, and it is expensive without scholarships, I do not regret my time there at all. The diversity on campus alone made the experience so much richer, and the community is caring and willing to help. For tough times, there is the counseling center, and the fitness center on campus helps burn some energy when things get tough as well.

The professors at Salem College really define the educational experience at the school. Due to the college's small size, the professors work closely with students as mentors, friends, and instructors. They are all incredibly dedicated to the success of their students inside and outside of the classroom. Read More a family. Everyone is deeply involved in everything that happens on campus. And, alumni are very supportive of currently enrolled students. The college is the oldest continuously running women's college. Additionally, campus diversity is currently around 50%. So, the sociopolitical environment is as liberal as it gets. As a private institution, the school offers a ton of financial aid assistance. HOWEVER, as a private institution, administration works differently than other public schools and students sacrifice many of their rights because of it - specifically the right to protest. And, having operated since 1772, the infrastructure can be a total nuisance to those living on-campus. Also, as a small school, it lacks many of the resources and programs offered at bigger institutions. Nonetheless, Salem College is an excellent educational investment.

Salem College is the best place for your undergraduate! The campus is beautiful and classes are easy to walk to. The professors are brilliant and the students are diverse. You will have no problem making friends in this close knit community! Even though it is a Women's College , there are less regulations on having visitors in dorms than most schools.In some cases you are even allowed 24 hours visitations (over the weekend). The campus is dry and very strict about having alcohol but if you are of... Read More age you are allowed to have it in concealed locations. Plus there are plenty of bars less than five minutes away located in the downtown area. If you feel a little weird about attending a Women's College don't be ! After a while you won't even notice that everyone around you is a female. The only time you will notice the lack of males is when one is walking on campus. Hopefully he is walking with another female because public safety might tackle him! The only thing I would not give an A rating to is the food. Breakfast and Lunch are usually good but I am always disappointed in the dinner choices. If you are vegan, gluten free, or vegetarian they have diversified for you. Luckily there is the new Students Center which has its own menu but if you don't have Salem Bucks I would not suggest buying anything. All in all, the campus is safe, clean and willing to meet any of your needs.

Although I was never sure of what I wanted to become in life, I am very glad I made the decision to obtain both an International Business and Dance studies degree. Knowing that these two programs were completely opposite of each other, I believed it would give me twice the opportunity of experiencing two different worlds in one college setting. I am happy to say that Salem College was a complete blessing to me due to their amazing instruction quality. They have truly made this process smoother and have been there every step of the way. The connections and network I have been able to create in such a short spam of time is incredible as well. Even through the breaks the staff made sure we stayed involved and connected to our community, something very treasured and always attempted. Taking advantage of all or any opportunities given to me is really what has helped my programs become more interesting.

I received both my graduate and undergraduate degrees from Salem College, and I couldn't be happier with the quality of education I received! The information was rigorous and useful in the work world, and it made me a better teacher in a more competitive, 21st Century world. The professors were always helpful and highly accessibly any time they were needed, and with small class sizes, I was on a first-mane basis with all of them.
