Great support in the Humanities program. All my instructors WANT to help their students. They've also helped me navigate the program requirements. Pro tip: Don't rely on DegreeWorks. Get clarification during advising appointments, take a lot of notes, and send them a follow-up email to confirm what you discussed. That way you have a record of what your advisor told you, just in case the Registrar disputes whether you've completed the program requirements, or if you have to get a new advisor. The... Read More

Program gets you ready for either becoming an exercise scientist or as a cardiac rehab specialist. Any other field associated with exercise science is not implemented and taught, such as strength and conditioning.

I feel like the university is the best in southeastern virginia, at least for the sciences. I marked it low on Transportation largely due to the local area's reluctance to embrace mass transit. The university is doing its best to work with this, but ultimately the other cities in the area (Virginia Beach, Chesapeake) need to pitch in and support mass transit.

The Graduate program in Biology at Old Dominion University is an awesome opportunity and you will work with some of the best professors in the field. The on-campus housing is few and highly limited, parking on campus is a work in progress but overall the faculty is highly accessible and willing to listen to any and all concerns. The student body while competitive are a unit that contribute and commiserate together in order to get the most out of the experience that is graduate school.

Social activities have traditionally not been Grad focussed, but things have been in improving trend in the past few years. Housing not available to Grad students. Being urban campus, not very many Grad students live close to campus.

Overall, this is a great university. My one big complaint is food. Please upgrade this. I've learned a lot from my professors. I think this university will only grow to become a top state and nationally recognized institution in the future.

Could do with spending more on technology in education, housing, transportation. Should definitely improve quality of education. Good diversity of students in the university and attempts to bring students together. The sub-urban surrounding town is not your fault.

ODU has the most diverse campus I have ever seen. The variety of times courses are available and options of taking courses via distance ed is fantastic for those who have children or are working while trying to earn their degree. From the very beginning of starting my program at ODU, my advisor asked what my plans for a career were so my time spent in school could be geared towards that goal. Every professor in the department I have come in contact with have been very helpful and more than happy... Read More

As a graduate student, the advisor you have really makes or breaks your graduate school experience. There are many exceptional faculty members in the sciences, and ODU is on its way to becoming more of a research-oriented university.
