I greatly enjoyed my time at NYU! It was a wonderful experience to attend the Stern School of Business, and it taught me a lot about both myself and the business world. I was able to gain valuable internship experiences at companies in the beauty, media, and tech industries thanks to the amazing NYU alumni network, which contributed to me being able to land a full-time job in my field of study less than six months after graduation. I studied Sales and Marketing at New York University, and the experience significantly shaped my understanding of the modern business environment. I moved to New York to attend school. I was very excited to do so, I had a lot a dreams about what school would be like. It hasn't been a single one of those things. I thought that I would feel like I'm apart of a community, that I would meet cool people and professors and learn something that I wouldn't have learned at a school from my home state. When I think back to my time at NYU as a Political Science major, class of 2017, what stands out most isn’t one single class or professor—it’s the feeling of constantly being just a little overwhelmed, a little inspired, and a little more awake to the world than I was the year before.
NYU didn’t hand me a neatly packaged “college experience.” There were no quads, no football games, no sense that the university existed separately from the rest of life. Instead, campus was the city. I used to joke with... Read More friends that NYU didn’t feel like school until midterms, when suddenly the entire student population materialized in Bobst Library like it was a migration pattern. But what NYU lacked in traditional structure, it made up for in something I didn’t realize I needed at 18: the freedom to figure out the kind of adult I wanted to become.
Politics felt incredibly real at NYU. Walking out of an international relations seminar and straight into a protest in Union Square wasn’t unusual—it was normal. The 2016 election unfolded during my junior year, and the city felt like the center of the universe. Our professors didn’t shy away from the messiness of what was happening; if anything, they leaned into it. Discussions that year felt raw and sometimes uncomfortable, but they also taught me how to disagree with people while still listening—an ability I didn’t fully appreciate until long after graduation.
The political science department itself had its quirks. Some classes were more theory-heavy than I would’ve liked, and there were definitely professors who seemed to live solely in the world of academia. But there were others—like the adjunct who worked at the UN, or the professor who pushed us to understand political behavior through both data and empathy—who changed the way I think. They made the field feel urgent and alive.
NYU also taught me how to be resourceful. When your “campus” is Manhattan, you learn to navigate internships, part-time jobs, late-night subway rides, and the constant temptation to do something more interesting than your assigned reading. In hindsight, that juggling act was one of the most valuable parts of my education. It helped me build confidence that I could handle the real world because, in many ways, I was already living in it.
Socially, NYU can be hit or miss, and I felt both sides of it. It’s easy to feel anonymous, or like everyone else has a plan while you’re still figuring things out. But the friendships I did form were deep, shaped by shared subway commutes, 1am halal cart dinners, and the surreal feeling of watching the sun rise over Washington Square after staying up too late talking about life.
Looking back eight years later, NYU didn’t mold me—it challenged me, pushed me, and sometimes exasperated me. But it also expanded my world. It taught me to think critically, to question assumptions, and to see politics as something lived, not just studied.
I don’t think NYU is for everyone. But for me, graduating in 2017 with a political science degree felt like stepping out of one whirlwind and directly into another—but with a deeper sense of how the world works, and how I want to operate within it.

The master’s program exceeded my expectations in both academic rigor and professional relevance. The curriculum is thoughtfully structured, combining foundational theory with practical, real-world applications that are immediately valuable in today’s competitive landscape. Courses are delivered by knowledgeable and highly supportive faculty who demonstrate a clear commitment to student success.

I particularly appreciated the program’s strong emphasis on critical thinking, leadership, and analytical... Read More skills. The learning environment encourages collaboration while still allowing students the flexibility to tailor their experience to their individual interests and career goals. Access to academic resources, mentorship opportunities, and industry insights further enriched the overall experience.

The environment was hostile and adversarial. I was disappointed by the number of students and professors who engaged in gossiping, smearing others, not working well together (not sharing work or credit), etc. There were clear favorites (usually the sycophants and charmers). Most of the students are from 1 country/region (not the U.S.) and unfortunately a lot of them have an "us vs. them" mentality. At least the courses were challenging and interesting, although the program cannot teach you everything... Read More in 2 years. Most of the courses are taught using R, a few in Stata (but no Python!).

NYU is one of the most overrated universities there is. Attending NYU was the biggest mistake of my life. If you are not interested in getting your foot in Wall Street, do yourself a favor and go to other school where you can have the proper campus experience and be appreciated and respected as a student. There are a lot of poorly qualify professors at NYU and if you get problem you won’t get the help you need. What NYU does not say is the number of students who end up dropping out of the program... Read More because they didn't get the education they were hoping to get.

Being surrounded by professional scholars at NYU automatically challenge my current thought process and deepen my understanding of technology. I was tested in working with other classmates from all walks of life, thus creating an environment of teamwork abilities. My experience at NYU has enabled me to learn how to facilitate work and leadership skills amongst a diverse group of people. New York University is a wonderful institution for students who are going into careers in law, scienece and business. However, if you are looking to work in social work or education, it is not the most economical choice. New York University isn't generous when it comes to financial aid. I completed my degree in 1998, and I am still paying back my student loan from over twenty years ago. You can receive the same quality education at a local college at a much cheaper rate. Going to NYU for education... Read More isn't going to do anything for your career in education if you're planning on working in the classroom. Save your money.

PROFESSORS
The school consistently attracts top professions in their fields who are not only extremely knowledgeable but are seasoned professors who actually know how to teach. This made my classroom experience insightful, even if I did not particularly like the class. I was interested in my major so I constantly chose advanced lectures and/or seminars and the workload still felt doable. ENVIRONMENT
Washington Square Park is one of the most vibrant areas in NYC but, that being said, the Park also attracts some colorful characters, so always wise to be on alert even if you feel the area has a college quad feel. For example, I was walking across the park in the evening (still bright out) with a friend once and two homeless men felt comfortable enough to follow us to our dorm and try to grab at my friends backpack. However, these incident are few so it still doesnt sway my love for the area in general. You have McDougal Street which has great cheap food/drink/bars; St. Marks is a short walk with also great food/drinks; LES has the club-ish scene; and SoHo for your shopping indulgences. Great area overall.
