McNeese State University

I initially chose this program based on colleagues who said they had a “good experience,” but my experience has been very different. While I never expected this program to be easy, many of us are dealing with the same problems. From the beginning, we were told to “keep our heads down and just get the work done,” which became clear was necessary because the program does not seem designed for student success. There is no grade curve, and when exams are poor across the class, we are told they are “under... Read More review,” yet no explanation is provided about how points are reassigned. Our first exam has been “under review” for two months, with no transparency in the process. Based on previous semesters, it seems that points will be given at the end only to certain students, rather than through a consistent standard. When concerns about this were raised, grading for written assignments suddenly became noticeably harsher. Overall, the environment has felt demeaning and demoralizing.

Transferring within the consortium is also not what they make it sound like. You cannot easily switch schools; they only allow 12 hours to be taken elsewhere, despite serious program concerns. Clinicals have also shown that each school within the consortium holds students to very different expectations, with some programs requiring far less busy work. Yes, the tuition is reasonable, and the instructors may appear kind, but please do not let that mislead you. Based on my experience, I (and many other students) would strongly recommend choosing another program.

This is a great university overall. I enjoyed my time very much at McNeese. The atmosphere is great and so are the students, faculty, and staff. The campus is not very large or intimidating, but it is not extremely small either. I think it is a great size. It leaves you enough time to get to classes on time. The professors are pretty good overall. I felt that nearly all of my professors wanted the best for me and truly wanted me to succeed in their class. It is extremely difficult to find a parking spot most days. Also, there are hardly any resources available for finding jobs once you graduate. Before I graduated, I tried to go to the bookstore and use their resources to help with finding career opportunities, but there were none. They claimed there was a section of staff made to help you, but I saw none of this. They made you feel like you were left all alone in that aspect. I had a wonderful experience in the end. I loved the town of Lake Charles. I feel like it was the greatest college experience that I could have asked for. I would not go anywhere else if I had the chance. I wanted to get my graduate degree at McNeese, but needed something online. Unfortunately, they do not offer online graduate programs. I would suggest for anyone to attend this college if they have the opportunity,

The Psychology department at McNeese State University is well versed in several sub fields of psychology. The faculty are broad in their experience and research backgrounds, and they are very helpful in pursuit of student education. The counseling portion of the degree is substantial, and it provides excellent foundational preparation for an LPC career track. McNeese State University is a small college with a very big heart. The professors and instructors in the math department truly care for the well being of every student. Professors go out of their way to make sure a student is comfortable to a subject and even spend large amounts of time helping a single student out of class time. Read More math department at McNeese makes me so proud because I know I was apart of helping people understand something may people have a lot of trouble with. The members of the math department at McNeese also care about more than just what happens in their department when students are involved. I personally have been helped many times figuring out what should be done in a situation that has nothing to do the the department itself and never felt like I was a burden. McNeese is such a great environment to learn, I would not have gone any other place.

I received my undergraduate degree and graduate degree from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I studied Special Education and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I have been a Special Education teacher for six years now and I feel that I was very well prepared for my career through the excellent professors and resources that my education at MSU provided. I was so proud to help put her mind at ease of knowing that her own mother had gone before her to pave the way for her experience. We are a family of MSU graduates. My youngest sister attended MSU, and my oldest daughter as well as two nieces did the same. It's easy to encourage your own children and family when you have had such an incredible experience and opportunity. McNeese State University College of Nursing paved hope and opportunity to many flourishing Register Nurses. For four years, I have had the opportunity to grow in career as a RN, and allow the knowledge I gained, as an undergrad, to reach the momentum set forth by my teacher, advisors, and preceptors. My program is a non-degree seeking one and I will be done with my course work as of this Wednesday. The classes I have taken are going to grant me an Educational Diagnostician add-on certification which means that I will be able to test potential special education students and coordinate any necessary services. these services can range from Speech to Occupational Therapy services. My classes have mainly fallen under the Special Education umbrella, but I have also taken a few Psychology and general... Read More Education courses for this add-on. I have learned a great deal about testing students, and especially about how to test them to ensure that their scores are both reliable and valid which will offer scores with fidelity.

The M.A.T. program at McNeese did not meet expectations. While there were a few classes that were helpful, overall I feel unsatisfied at the completion of my program. Most of my classes were simply a completion of assignments with minimal guidance from the professor. I learned the most from my last semester of student teaching, but that was because of my cooperating teacher and the school that I was in. Read More entire thing on McNeese's part was very unorganized in my opinion, but I was able to keep myself organized and the Education Department did a good job of responding to questions. And my student teaching has taught me the most, and I feel ready to start a career because of it. My concern with the school is in the financial department. I had many issues with delayed charges. I was not communicated with about additional charges that blind sided me half-way through the semester. This happened every semester of my entire program. Although the people I spoke with when I tried to find a solution were very kind and handled it well, they could not do anything for me. I was very unsatisfied. On the other hand, McNeese did a great job sending email updates about campus activities, safety protocols, and job opportunities. I felt very informed as far as non-academic student life was concerned.

If you are getting a psychology degree, be open to getting your masters. You can get a job with a psych degree but it may be 2 more difficult. However, don't let that deter you. Psychology is a great field and it has a lot of opportunities. McNeese had a great department with internship (some paid) opportunities, a variety of different electives, and a great staff of professors that were always there to support you. It also had a requirement that you had to have a minor of 15 hours. You can use this however you see fit and you can shape it to help you in your career.
