Kutztown University of Pennsylvania

While I certainly had a lot of great professors and learned a lot, my enrollment counselors were almost completely useless. I had to navigate a lot of choosing appropriate classes myself, and often found them making mistakes and rushing in their recommendations for classes. My questions often felt pushed aside. Like I mentioned, I found the classes and professors to be for the most part very informative, but now that I’m in the “real world” working in my field I believe the curriculum could be modified... For me, attending Kutztown University was a mixed experience. I was not accepted into any other universities despite applying, and the credits I earned in community college did not transfer over, meaning I had to take classes I'd already taken over the course of two years. The campus had a lot of events and activities to partake in. I enjoyed walking around outside each day. The classes I took were also educational, helping me to major in communication design, a subset of graphic design. However,... Read More they placed me in a dorm with roommates who did not respect my personal space, and this carried over to apartments I lived in for four years. Due to these experiences, I would not recommend that students attend Kutztown.

The Masters of Arts in Education program is designed for individuals who have obtained a Bachelor's degree not in education but who wish to move their career towards education. This program covers aspects of PreK through 4th grade learning. The various subjects taught helped me to become a 21st century teacher that was marketable and experienced. The professors were engaging, knowledgeable, and caring. They also valued our success as students. I felt as thought professors took a personal approach... Kutztown University's Clinical Mental Health Counseling program has helped me advance in the field and I have had some really great professors. With any school, it is obvious which professors are passionate about teaching and there for students, while others are not as dedicated. The program seems to be in transition with faculty members which should help with miscommunication and disorganization between faculty and students. You do have to advocate for yourself and find a mentor within the department, or else you may get lost in the shuffle.

The electronic media program is awesome, you can start taking major classes immediately. Many of the required classes are hands on. Post Production, Field Production, Studio Production, Audio Production, Lighting, Event and Doc to name a few. The department has a full mac editing lab with both Final Cut Pro 7 and Adobe CS6 Master Collection. They have a fully equipped studio, with 3 cameras, teleprompter, grass valley switcher, multi-viewer, large green screen, and full wall black on track full studio... Read More lighting grid. They also recently built a brand new mobile production trailer, with Ross carbonite switcher and full multi-viewer. The professors really know their stuff, and are always willing to help. We were nominated for several Mid-Atlantic Emmy's and have recently brought a trophy home. As for the school as a whole, there are many ways to get involved, on campus housing is good, many choose to move off campus as soon as they can to save money. There are many dining options, a meal swipe counts as $4.95 all across campus. Class sizes vary from 25 to 200, depending on whether it's a gen ed or major class. Most major classes top out around 30-40. Electronic Media classes are typically under 25.
