Indiana University - Indianapolis

This school being known for being a commuter campus, is true to its soul. If you live on campus, you should try to live at the tower or North Hall; other housing options make it almost impossible to access student dining on the weekends and are located a reasonable distance away from the main campus, so it's not ideal during the winter if the shuttles are not running. Read More lecture hall, from when I was there, almost every student had at least one class there, and there was a cockroach problem. Most of all if you are looking for a greater sense of community, go to Bloomington. This school does not have a football team, so there aren't really tailgates. There are plenty of clubs to join, but overall, the school lacks student engagement activities that would be offered at a more traditional university landscape. If you want a traditional college experience, go to Bloomington.

I was able to learn a lot at this university, during my time as an undergrad when it was still IUPUI. I did not know anything about programming, but obtained necessary foundational knowledge while attending here. However, after the split, I felt like the quality of the academics went down. A lot of the amazing CSCI professors left and the course offerings were really low. I even met with my advisor once to plan my schedule, and she said there would definitely be more courses added (there wasn't).... Read More Once I finished my undergraduate degree, I went for my Master's Degree since I was a part of the accelerated Master's program. They were still refining the courses, so there were very few classes and some of them did not seem interesting. I enrolled in the ones that appealed to me and still had a great time though. I was able to learn about new tools/software, added projects to my portfolio, got to do interesting research, and also worked with great professors. I would recommend the school in a few years once it gets more stable.

This school was a good fit for me for many reasons. First, they accepted transfer credits from Ivy Tech, where I earned an Associate's Degree. However, the downside was that they only accept a limited number of transfer credits, so keep that in mind if you are looking to transfer. Now, many two-year colleges have specific transfer programs. Second, the Liberal Arts professors were top-rate. It did not matter what class I took, the majority of my professors not only knew the material but had a passion... Third, the Philosophy program could be better if they incorporated more logic courses (which they recently cut back even more), however, the professors were incredible and always had the time and willingness to meet with students. They have at least two very well known scholars associated with the Philosophy department. My second issue with the program was a lack of historical context. In the four years that I attended (two for my Masters), I did not see any class offered on the classics like Plato or Aristotle. Much of the classes were based on modern Western analytical philosophy.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is a diverse educational institution. It offers various programs and is close to the heart of downtown Indianapolis. The program, in its' current form, is an unorganized mess. The advisors have no idea about course electives, curriculum requirements, or changes. Often course curriculum will change (it has three times since starting the program) and the advisor will make you change courses, even though you entered in a different catalog year. It takes the advisor weeks to get back to you and registration sometimes closes before you can get the information you need or permission to enter a course. Each of the professors... Read More have different and varying expectations. Some courses have little to no work in them, to the point you have no idea what you are paying for. Other courses, the material is non-existent and the professors have expectations for what you are supposed to know, but what is not taught by the program. The practicum placements are atrocious. The field coordinator cannot figure out where to place people and most people have to find a placement on their own. If they do not, then they will not be able to move forward in the program. This often leads students to take practicum placements that are not conducive to their career goals. Additionally, course grading is all over the place. During the middle of the program, the professors decided they started wanting an Abstract on every paper, however no one informed the students and the refused to change the grades or offer feedback. In the professional practice / counseling courses, the feedback made absolutely no sense, as if someone with schizophrenia wrote it. At this point, I have no idea what I am paying for. I'm not sure if other MSW programs are like this, but almost everything in this program is lacking. If you have other options, please go to another program.

IUPUI is an excellent choice for those looking to earn their degree in Library and Information Science. The MLIS Program offers classes that are relevant to todays field, and the coursework does well to prepare students for future employment.
