Eastern Michigan University

Most of the instructors at Eastern Michigan are fantastic and do a great job, but like all things in this world, not everyone is great. My main problem is with the administration and how the university is run. This "university" is selling out to the highest bidder. It started with the on-campus food, then the parking, and now housing. Prices have skyrocketed and students are always on the short end of the stick. It's almost as if they don't want people to live and be educated on campus unless they... Read More are willing to pay an arm and a leg. In terms of the administrators, instead of being able to talk to administrators in certain offices, you get directed to a call center that can't give you any information because you need to contact the department that you want to contact in the only means that they want you to contact them. Meaning you cant talk to an administrator over the phone or in person. The only reason I stayed at the university is because of the relatively cheap price and my program's professors, If I was starting over as a senior in high school I would stay far away from this shell of a university.

Eastern Michigan University has a moderately sized, nice campus thats not too big as to be overwhelming, but not too small as to feel cluttered or cramped. The staff are dedicated to the students and the professors are mostly very knowledgeable in their fields. My greatest complaint is how much the prices for everything increased over my years there, while the quality of school did not rise to meet the tuition hikes. Far too much money is spent on sports and on unnecessary cosmetic changes on campus... Read More instead of where they are needed. Almost everything has been privatized in some way as an attempt to bring in money to the school, but that only allows outside companies to try and profit off of students now (such as with the new and over-zealous parking company who squeeze every penny they can out of students). EMU is a good school that holds a lot of nice qualities, but their poor budget management in the past has caught up to them and is hurting current and prospective students financially.

prices are outrageous. instructors waste valuable educational time to talk politics and religion time that the students pay for. parking prices are monumental and the parking is terrible you cannot find a spot anytime between 10 am and 1pm. campus is very poorly built especially for handicapped individuals. there are hidden fees like you wouldn't believe. classes are too big. classes get canceled way too often before semester starts. overall if you can avoid this university I would. Eastern Michigan University is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I graduated from University of North Carolina in 2013 and received my bachelor's degree. I planned to take a year or two, at most, off to work in the field before dedicating more time and money to a master's program. I became pregnant and had to push those two years to about four years. Once I was enrolled in the program, I became increasingly nervous about the amount of time I had to take off between school and began... Read More to doubt myself and the quality of work I could give in a masters program. The professors at Eastern strive to help their students achieve like I have never experienced before. I have spoken to professors of many universities and often times I hear that the biggest downfall of being a professor is teaching because many of them are more dedicated to their studies and the research. Eastern professors love teaching and they love helping students find their way. I have benefited from many emails and meetings that professors have gone out of their way to have with me, ensuring that I am on the right track and fully understand the material in class. All of my doubts have subdued and I am more thankful than anything that Eastern chose me to be apart of their wonderful program.

The professors of Eastern Michigan's Clinical Behavioral Master's of Science program are top notch. They truly want students to learn as much as possible, and are always happy to provide additional support through meeting with students, giving additional readings, etc. The workload is tough, but none of it is "busy work" - everything directly applies to what we are learning and will eventually apply to our future careers. While it may not be inherently safe, there are people whose job it is to walk students to their cars (for free), which definitely helps me feel at ease. I think the biggest downside to Eastern is the fact that the WiFi is very spotty, and certain classrooms don't have the best heating and cooling. However, I would recommend the program and school to anyone.

EMU was a fantastic university! I was a member of the Honors Program as well as created my own dual major (with the approval of the Dean of Students). I found my Honors classes to be exceptional in quality in addition to enjoying small class sizes. I was grateful and pleased at the University's willingness and flexibility to grant me a dual major from two separate colleges within the University, once I presented my case.
