Clayton State University

I will start off with the good parts of the university. It's not a party school so you know everyone is there to get their degrees or do enough credits to transfer to a different university. People are usually friendly, there isn't much chaos apart from rare occurrences that aren't because of the student body.

However, the academics side of the university isn't the best. Some professors are known to never teach or help their students, and the quality of the lecture varies dramatically. I think it... Read More has to do with the area the school is in because most of the students there are from high schools nearby where they didn't prepare the students well enough for college.

Clayton State University was/is a great university. The professors and instructors in the history department were very hands-on and there for all the students. Throughout my academic career at Clayton State, I learned a great deal about the history field and was able to navigate the direction I wanted my future career to go. Read More with large classes. It was easy to navigate classes and meet people on campus. The campus is in Morrow, Ga and 15 miles from downtown Atlanta, which is a great location because you are surrounded by so many different places and there is always something to do. Since the campus is mid-size, you do not have to worry about feeling lost as you would at a larger university. The interaction between student and staff is close and it is easy to get a problem solved if one does arise. When I attended Clayton State, their nursing program was always talked about and I have a few friends and relatives that graduated from that program and are doing great things. So, if you are interested in nursing, Clayton State is the place for you. Clayton State was where I found my love for archives and public history. If you are interested in the public history field please reach out to Dr. Randall Godden, he was a great help to me when I took an interest in public history. I have zero regrets for choosing to attend Clayton State University. The professors are great and care about their students. I felt as prepared as one could be going into the field of education. Clayton State University is a great school to attend, not only because it's affordable but also because there are faculty members who are always willing to help. Faculty members that I've come across have always been willing to lend a helping hand, whether it came to registering for courses or simply just finding my way across campus. My degree program was all about learning how to become a more independent individual. My degree program has prepared me for actual working environments (thanks to the... One thing about being a psychology and human services major at this school is that you come across people from diverse backgrounds and that's another thing that can prepare you for the real world.

My sophomore year going into my senior year was great. However in my senior year the advisors I had were not good as senior advisors. The first advisor I had was new to the school and didn't know enough to help seniors. I asked if I could have another advisor and was given the choice of picking one. I chose a teacher I had previously had who was on top of his game as a teacher so I felt like he would make a great advisor. However, he was worst than the inexperienced advisor. He was too busy to meet... Read More with me when we scheduled meetings and very seldom responded back to emails. I noticed a discrepancy in the number of hours I had left in my senior year and I tried contacting him via email. I never received an email back. It was just a 1 hour discrepancy so I figured it must be wrong. However when it came time for me to get my degree I was advised that I was 1 hour short. The department chair tried to put blame on me stating that it is a students responsibility to make sure that they have enough hours. My issue with this is I contacted the advisor about the discrepancy and never heard anything back from him. Per the department chair this happened all the time where a person was lacking 1 or 2 hours to graduate. My question to her is why? So, is this the schools way of making more money off of the students? Students missing 1 or 2 hours to graduate should not be the norm. Dealing with this issue and the department chair made me see Clayton State in a totally different light. Initially I felt this was a school that cared and wanted the best for their students however after dealing with the department chair my feelings somewhat changed. I still think Clayton State is a good school I just don't have much respect for the department chair and some of her staff.

Clayton State University is a great school for anyone who enjoys small classes and attentive professors.It is the most diverse college campus I've ever seen. The workload is rigorous, but it prepares you to be successful in your desired field. Fall 2013, I started my first semester as a graduate student in the M.S. in Clinical Psychology program. Read More after my first semester, i know i can accomplish anything! After long nights that turned into early mornings of writing twenty page papers, I've gained a new respect for myself. Another pro was the relationship I built with my cohorts! My con only con would be the location. First time students should stay on campus to avoid the horrible traffic in the area. Getting to class on time is a must! I recommend Clayton State University to anyone who loves learning.
