The first thing to know is you are there to improve your GPA and to figure out your study method for each core class. The second thing is that there are dental school deans and admission representatives that visit the school that do presentations, 1 on 1 get to know sessions with you, and an opportunity to put your face and application above the thousands of students that you compete with during the application cycle. Please take advantage of these resources that Pamela and Dr. Chandra put forth. If you are intimidated or shy reach out gradually to be comfortable, but go to as many as possible to be comfortable around these professionals from the schools. Monitor your lifestyle habits, take breaks and spend time with yourself and loved ones, network, but most importantly be yourself and humble when it comes to opportunities and getting advice. Everyone wants to help you, but you got to show people effort and that you care about achieving this opportunity. If you do that, then you will be amazed at what opportunities will be knocking at your door. Oral pathology had to be one of my favorite classes ever and I appreciated learning things that will be relevant to dental school. I will admit that I needed some time to adjust to some of the classes (anatomy is no joke!), but once I hit my stride and found what worked best for me, everything clicked. One key thing I think that helped me with my studies was to study with friends and I recommend if you are shy to break out of your comfort zone and get to know your peers in the program. The culture here is collaborative and I am lucky to say that I've made some incredible friends for life. Some other things I liked about Barry were the small class sizes, the student organizations you can join to get more involved, the amazing location in South Florida so you can enjoy the beach or downtown Miami during study breaks, and the personal attention that the faculty gives you.
