Auburn University at Montgomery

I attended this school for several years and ultimately graduated, though my circumstances caused it to take longer than average. Throughout my time there, most of my professors were kind, knowledgeable, and seemed genuinely invested in student success, which I truly appreciated. Academically, I felt well prepared. I attended Auburn University at Montgomery as a transfer student. The school made the transfer process exceptionally easy as the advisors and staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. Throughout my entire college experience at this school, I was assigned to one specific advisor who ensured that I was taking the proper courses and would graduate on time. I came to Auburn University at Montgomery in the fall of 2015. I transferred here from University of South Alabama to play on the varsity basketball team and I regretfully have to say that this university is sub-par. I will begin with the positives of the school, though there are few. The class sizes are small which means you have the opportunity to create an strong relationship with your professors, something that is not often found at larger universities. The majority of the educators here want to help you succeed and will often set time aside from their own schedule to help with any questions you have for them. The new Wellness Center is equipped with a pool (both indoor and outdoor), plenty of treadmills and elliptical, and a wide variety of free weights and machines. Contrary to theses two positives about the school, the university has a lot of room to improve. Montgomery is one of the most violent and crime-ridden cities in the United States and it is prevalent on campus as well. There was a shooting in the courtyards at the beginning of the Fall 2016 semester and it causes people to question their safety on campus. There was no announcement of the shooting nor what areas were safe or unsafe to enter until an hour or so after the situation had been taken care of. Academic advisers are too often under educated about the developments in the areas that they are supposed to advise students about. I know multiple students who have had to put their graduation on hold because of bad advising, which is totally unacceptable. The financial aid office is slow to do their work and the past three semesters I have been here I have received my Pell grand almost four weeks late each time. The financial aid staff is rude and extremely short when you go to ask questions about the progress of your aid. There is a huge parking issue on campus and they have recently made renovations that didn't help the problem at all. The residential parking is overflowed and campus police will show no understanding when you are parked out of zone for an extremely short amount of time. The "cafe" food is terrible and there are not many options for the students who stay on campus. There have been numerous times when students have gotten sick from the cafe food and no changes have been made. Overall this university needs a lot of work if they want to appeal to and appease potential and current student. I would not recommend this university to anyone. If you are looking for a quality education and a great college experience, consider going to another university other than AUM.
