American Public University System Reviews of Bachelor's in Human Services

For the most part I enjoyed online learning and this Institution. I have recommended American Public University to others. Most of the teachers/professors were engaging and interactive. They gave valuable feedback on papers and within the forums. Some were willing to go out of their way to help increase understanding. The piece I had a difficult time was when students would not respond to forums until Saturday or Sunday not giving time for others to interact. They missed out on additional learning... Read More and interaction. I also felt that many of the core classes had much of the same content. I felt like I was writing the same paper many times over and trying not to plagiarize myself. There are many other critical content areas that should have been covered in these classes. All of this said, I for the most part enjoyed the courses.

I wanted to like this university, I really did. But, I felt like I never learned anything. I put in the work, read the assignments and the minuscule lessons supposedly made by the instructors. I wrote and wrote and wrote my heart out. In the end, I learned very little. The instructors are kind, but don't offer much for instruction. Everything is student-led. The forums are a joke. The instructions for assignments are vague and even following the grading rubric does not guarantee a good grade. It's... Read More almost like the instructors want you to read their minds, given they aren't offering much in their "classrooms". The worst class I took was an anthropology course where the instructor provided links to information about "Indiana Jones" every week, and the lessons took me less than five minutes to read. What a joke that was. I didn't learn much in that course at all. I am transferring, but not a single course I have taken will transfer. I pretty much have to start over. At this point, I am certain I will learn more in a real university anyway. If all you're after is a piece of paper that says you earned a degree, then I guess it's not so bad. But, for people like me, really interested in learning, please go elsewhere.

Oh My God!!!!!! The Financial Aid Department is a joke! It's such a hassle to deal with them. So far I've lost 2 semester trying to solve every financial aid inconvenience that it's presented to me every single time I think I'm done. All of these because of miscommunication withing the Financial Aid department staff and perhaps because many of them don't know what they are doing. One person says something and then another person contradicts the other one and it's just a pain in the @$$. I am so ready... Read More to just finish but I always get behind because of the financial aid department.

I found AMU/APUS to be a great school. Yes there are teachers you may not exactly get along with, or that do not respond well to forums, but the overall experience was great for me. I am not a very picky person when it comes to instructors. For instance some took longer to grade my submitted assignments and some didn't respond very often in forums, but I am an adult and the point of the forum is to discuss topics with classmates. I found some students would BS through the forums and that annoyed... Read More me but that isn't APUS's problem. Some people are just lazy and thats it. I think out of my whole degree I disliked 2 of my teachers and guess what??, they were general education teachers. One was my political science teacher (SHE HATES TRUMP) and she graded unfair. As long as I agreed with her I got an excellent grade. It was BS!!! Another teacher I had a hard time with was my history teacher. His directions were so confusing and he focused more on my APA format then the actual assignment. THESE TWO TEACHERS however do not ruin my view of this school. I loved my core and major requirement teachers. They were all so uplifting and always worked well with me. I did have to submit some papers late and as long as I let them know what was going on I didn't lose tons of points. I felt cared for at this school. The financial aide department responds right away to emails. My advisor was very helpful whenever I had questions. I overall enjoyed my time at APUS/AMU. I am proud to be a graduate and would encourage anyone who can keep themselves motivated in online classes to attend. I am proud to see my degree and it is recognized. I have already accepted a higher paying job!
