Adelphi University

Adelphi University is unique in its location and on campus atmosphere. It is situated in a location that is close to many of the local eateries and highways. If you have a car or use public transportation it is very easy to get around when looking for something to do off campus. Professors knew me by name and were able to make recommendations based on their personal experience with me as a student. They are always willing to help and make time to work with students outside of classroom hours.

I grew up with the dreams of being a performer on Broadway. I loved to act and dance, but most importantly I loved to sing. I chose to go to this university merely because it was the best financial option for me, not because it was well known for their theater arts program. I was accepted into their music program and they knew that I was interested in pursuing musical theater upon graduation. Unfortunately, the university did not have any vocal coaches that focused on musical theater repertoire,... Read More just classical music. This was something I wasn't interested in pursuing, but I dealt with it. I then wanted to audition for the upcoming musical (since there is no musical theater program, they only have a musical production once every 4 years). However, because I was not a theater major, I was not allowed to audition for the musical which was a major disappointment. I then met with both my music adviser as well as my vocal coach to see if any of them had any connections in the musical theater world or could help me find auditions both locally and in Manhattan for summer stock shows or shows during the semester and they had absolutely no idea where to start. I was puzzled, surely I was not the only student who ever wanted to pursue musical theater. This particular program I was in, was a major factor into why I wanted to graduate as soon as possible. Aside from the program, the school itself was rather enjoyable. They have a lot of programming and events held throughout the year where students can truly find a place where they fit in. I was fortunate and found my place in an internationally-recognized sorority. I loved being able to fund raise for a philanthropy I felt so strongly about, while getting to educate other members of the Adelphi community on this philanthropy as well.

My experience at Adelphi University was certainly full of life-changing experiences. From my classes, to work experience, to extracurriculars, I learned a lot about the person that I was and who I wanted to be.
Ill start with talking about my classes. I was an International Studies major with a focus on Political Science and Spanish, and part of the Levermore Global Scholars Program. My professors were all wonderful. I learned from intelligent and motivated individuals who were all still practicing... Read More in their field of study. I had experiential learning opportunities, like participating in the International Model UN program in NYC. While I didnt take advantage of them in school, there were a number of academic supports on campus.
In regards to work, I held a part-time job in the admissions office all four years of college, which led to my working there full-time right after graduation. Both in my undergraduate experience and post-grad, I learned how to advocate for myself and seek opportunities. The Office of Admissions was open to creating the first undergraduate Intern program during my senior year, building a multicultural recruitment arm during my first year as a full-time employee, and seeking new areas for recruitment. There was a lot to learn around the inner workings of a university, which were challenging when they did not fully align with my beliefs, especially for someone like me who worked hard and fought for students rights and advocacy. While this was difficult, it was a learning experience.
This leads me to the next topic- extracurriculars! Adelphi has a ton of student activities to get involved in that help to provide tremendous leadership skills. This is where I really started to exercise using my voice and where I really developed my passion around supporting underrepresented and marginalized peoples. As I mentioned, I was a very vocal student on campus, especially as one of few students of color. I would want future students to know that even though you may have these experiences, you do have a voice on this campus, and there are faculty and staff that are there to support you along the way.
Lastly, I have to mention that during my four years at Adelphi, I met my friends of a lifetime, and could not imagine life any other way. For all of this, I am incredibly grateful to the university.

Although tuition for the program is high, I have no doubt I will be able to pay it off in no time with my current job. The program is rigorous but no doubt will have you prepared for the real world and what to expect. In my first semester I was treating patients with state of the art equipment provided by Adelphi. I had professors who knew my name and took their time to explain the material in depth if needed. I made lifelong friendships and great networking connections, who I still keep in contact... Read More with now a year after we graduated. All of my classmates are either employed by schools, private practices, hospitals, nursing homes, home healthcare, or rehabs.

I will always be indebted to Adelphi University because it's where I became who I was meant to be. I earned three degrees from Adelphi--a BA and two masters degrees--so clearly, I had positive experiences there. My MFA professors took the time to get to know me. They praised my good work and called me out on things that were sub par and pushed me to do better. Read More craft of teaching and are not distracted by their own output or interests. Students are encourage to take classes outside of their chosen genre of focus, which is a great way to step outside of your comfort zone and push your writing to new limits. At Adelphi, I learned who I wanted to be and was given the tools to become that person.

My college offered a lot of cultural diversity to it's students. It has been around for many years. The campus is impeccably clean which allowed me to have great comfort and peace of mind as I put forth my efforts with my studies. It offers a vast curriculum for the students that ultimately afforded us the opportunity to have challenging careers in the fields of our choices which for me was Social Work. The Social Work program prepared me to work with people of all kinds. My schooling prepared me... Read More to be the great Humanitarian that I am today. It taught me the core values that are important to have when it comes to serving people. It prepared me to see humanity from a lens of being a vessel that people need in order to assist them with meshing their lives back together again. Not only did I obtain my undergraduate degree there I obtained my Masters degree as well. In reading the newsletters years later of the ongoing accomplishments of those that have graduated from my school evidence shows that the production of growing scholars is enormous. We are doing great things for the betterment of mankind. As a result of the education the community at large is receiving a much better continuity of care all across the board.
