For someone whose faith is central to their identity, an affordable online Catholic college can foster shared values among students and faculty. Even online, many Catholic schools cultivate spiritual formation and have their faith inform the academic experience, which can be meaningful to many. The online format lets students study from anywhere while still engaging with a faith community, campus ministry resources, and chaplaincy services virtually.

Since Catholic colleges are private institutions, they don't receive state funding subsidies, so tuition can be higher than public online universities. This is why the list below is created in order of lowest yearly tuition

Key Takeaways:

  • Every single school on this list charges identical in-state and out-of-state tuition. This is a major advantage of online Catholic colleges — your location doesn't penalize you financially, which opens up access to any of these schools no matter what state you're in.
  • The spread between the most affordable (#1 Central Methodist at $8,250) and the highest tuition on this affordability list (#8 Ottawa University at $15,180) is ~$6,900 per year. That's actually a fairly tight range for private college tuition, suggesting these schools are all genuinely competing to be accessible.

How We Rank "Most Affordable" Schools

2025 Most Affordable Online Degrees Badge

The OnlineU research team manually collects and verifies tuition data for every school on our lists, ensuring you see accurate, up-to-date costs whether you're pursuing an associate, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program. To qualify, schools must offer fully online degrees, hold institutional accreditation, and have verifiable enrollment data through the National Center for Education Statistics. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize schools that offer a consistent tuition rate across programs at the same degree level, so you're not caught off guard by unexpected price differences between majors, and for graduate programs we go a step further by individually calculating program costs since credit requirements and fees vary widely.

What Sets This School Apart:

  • Catholic colleges are often associated with higher private-school costs. Avila’s flat $300-per-credit online undergraduate rate creates unusual cost transparency across majors. Even as the most affordable rate on our list, median earnings are still high (in the 53rd percentile nationally) at $64,998 just a few years after graduation.
  • The university is founded and inspired by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Its emphasis on community, service, collaboration, global perspectives, and individual gifts reflects a Catholic educational tradition centered on human dignity and purposeful work.
  • Avila pairs its mission with a small-school academic model. Its 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio is stronger than many online institutions, and student reviews we've collected repeatedly point to caring faculty, accessible advising, and close mentorship.

AI Student Review Summary: Avila University receives mostly favorable feedback. There's a lot of praise for the small-campus environment, where we can identify close faculty relationships, accessible advising, and more individualized instruction as major strengths. Several reviewers value the intimate academic setting over larger universities, noting better engagement, discussion-based classes, and easier access to help. Cost is the most recurring drawback. There are concerns about limited course scheduling and scattered class times, which may make full-time work difficult. • With 10,796 online students, SLU has the most students enrolled online across this list. It also sits in roughly the top 2% nationally for online participation. That means that its online programs are not a small extension of the campus. They are central to how the university serves students. Additionally, the university has offered online education since 1998, giving it a much deeper track record than schools that moved online recently.
  • SLU describes its academics as grounded in a Catholic liberal arts foundation and shaped by Benedictine values, with the goal of educating the whole person — mind, body, and spirit.

Many praise the online format for its flexibility, accelerated eight-week terms, and ability to balance work, military service, and family commitments. Supportive advisors, responsive instructors in strong departments, practical coursework, and academic rigor are frequently highlighted. Several note career benefits, including promotions, job placement, and graduate school preparation. However, persistent issues include financial aid and billing problems—such as lost paperwork, delayed refunds, and unexplained fees—as well as uneven instructor quality, limited online support, costly textbooks, and cumbersome administrative processes.

What Sets This School Apart:

  • Most Catholic colleges emphasize values, community, and liberal arts formation. AMC does that — but it also concentrates heavily on fields where graduates can see immediate, measurable career advancement, particularly in public safety, emergency management, and government leadership. Median earnings among graduates here are exceptionally high at $96,877. That's in the top 3% nationally.
  • The learning environment itself reflects a small-college model. With a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio and relatively small online enrollment (151 students), AMC offers a more intimate, mentor-style experience than larger online universities.
  • At the same time, student reviews we've collected point to uneven quality across programs, suggesting that the experience can vary depending on your field of study.

AI Student Review Summary: These user reviews of Anna Maria College’s online bachelor’s programs present a mixed picture, with sentiment varying sharply by program. Flexibility stands out as a decisive enrollment factor. The main drawback is academic depth; the reviewer suggests the coursework may feel insufficiently challenging, especially if you already hold a prior degree, raising concerns about value relative to cost. The most negative feedback is that some encounter serious dissatisfaction with instructional quality, limited support, and weak program resources. The reviews suggest Anna Maria works best for you when flexibility and credential completion matter more than robust academic engagement.

  • With median alumni earnings of $82,560, Immaculata ranks in roughly the top 15% nationally, which is notably high for a school at this price point (though not as high as the school above).
  • A 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio places Immaculata among the most personalized environments in this ranking, and that shows up in how its programs are structured. Rather than operating as a large, self-service online system, Immaculata emphasizes cohort-based learning, direct faculty access, and structured support.

Immaculata is a great university with a beautiful campus and caring professors. The dorms are kept in great condition and anyone that attends Immaculata really feels like they're part of a family.

AI Student Review Summary: Students value the one-day-a-week scheduling, cohort structure, convenient satellite access, and instructors described as knowledgeable, supportive, and available outside class. There's appreciation for the beautiful campus, well-kept dorms, small class sizes, and a family-like atmosphere. There's recurring operational concerns that materially affected satisfaction. You would want to pay close attention to financial aid administration, billing support, and departmental communication, which several reviews describe as confusing, delayed, or unhelpful. We found some serious complaints about being sent to collections, and limited guidance on grants or loan prevention. Cost is another notable drawback, with one reviewer questioning whether the tuition justified the outcome for certain majors.

  • Carlow stands out not because it is the largest, cheapest, or highest-earning school on this list but because it delivers something rarer in online education, which is exceptionally high student satisfaction. Students we've interviewed gave it a 100% recommendation rate. In a market where many online degrees feel transactional, Carlow appears to deliver a more personal, relationship-driven model that resonates with the people going through it.
  • That experience is closely tied to Carlow’s Catholic Mercy identity. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy, the university emphasizes values like service, compassion, and social justice, and those themes show up directly in how programs are framed — around healing, leadership, and transformation rather than just career advancement alone.

Carlow was an excellent school for academic purposes. It allowed me to get the most from my classes and professors. I was able to graduate with three different certifications. That being said, it lacked social activities and experiences.

AI Student Review Summary: Students value the small-school environment, noting that they are more likely to receive a personal education rather than feel anonymous in large lecture halls. Several reviews emphasize strong professor access, hands-on advising, and meaningful classroom experiences, with one reviewer highlighting successful accommodation during a short-term disability. The main drawback is not academic weakness, but a thinner campus social experience. One reviewer says the university lacked social activities, and another mentions a notably poor required math course outside the major. Overall, these reviews suggest Carlow is especially appealing if you prioritize academic support, faculty engagement, and practical value over a highly active campus social scene.

  • SMWC was founded in 1840 by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and the Sisters of Providence, and its mission has always been tied to opening doors for students who might otherwise be left out.
  • The college launched the Women’s External Degree Program in 1973, making it one of the earliest independent study models for adults who needed to balance education with family and work.
  • SMWC’s median earnings are not especially strong ($43,969), but its 9:1 student-faculty ratio and 100% recommendation rate suggest that students value the personal attention, support, and mission fit. It's not just about pure salary payoff.

AI Student Review Summary: Reviews of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College are strongly positive, with most praising its flexible, high-value distance-learning format that enables career advancement without relocation or interrupting full-time work. The accredited, specialized programs are seen as accessible and unique. Small classes, cohort models, and residency weekends foster close peer connections and lasting professional networks. Faculty are described as qualified, compassionate, and highly engaged, offering personalized feedback in a supportive environment where students feel known. Coursework is practical, applicable in real-world settings, and builds professional confidence. Minor criticisms include communication gaps in the online format, travel expenses for required residencies, and mixed perceptions of campus food.

  • At $15,300 annually, Walsh sits comfortably below many private Catholic peers, but the more interesting signal is the combination of a top-quartile graduation rate (62%) and very high student sentiment (4.17 rating, 92% recommend). This shows that students actually finish and feel good about afterward.
  • At Walsh, there is intentionally small online enrollment (just 78 students!), making the experience closer to a guided, cohort-like environment with individualized oversight instead of a massive, self-directed online system.

AI Student Review Summary: Reviews of Walsh University present a mixed picture that leans positive overall. You see repeated praise for the university’s Catholic identity, even from the perspective that you do not need to be Catholic to value it. Reviewers consistently appreciate the emphasis on service learning, community engagement, friendliness, and a supportive, close-knit environment described as a “home away from home.” At the same time, the negative feedback is notably severe and specific. The clearest takeaway is that Walsh may appeal strongly to you if you value a faith-informed, personal, and community-oriented environment, but your experience may vary significantly depending on academic support quality and campus living expectations.

  • The deeper story here is that students appear to persist and finish at high rates. DSU is #1 on this list for both retention and graduation, with an 81% retention rate and 71% graduation rate. That makes its affordability claim more credible because the value of a degree here is attached to a higher likelihood of completion.
  • DSU is rooted in the Salesian tradition, which emphasizes humility, gentleness, practical wisdom, and meeting people where they are. That aligns closely with its online structure involving adult studies, micro-credentials, fully online options, blended formats, low-residency models, and flex courses that let students participate either in person or by video.

  • Chaminade’s differentiator is that its Catholic identity is inseparable from place. It's the only Catholic university in Hawaiʻi and one of only three Marianist universities in the U.S. That gives Chaminade a distinctive mission connected to faith, reason, service, justice, and respect for cultural complexity — values that align especially well with its Pacific, Hawaiʻi-based context.
  • At $18,000 annually, it remains relatively accessible for a private Catholic university, and the outcomes are strong: a 100% recommendation rate among students we surveyed, 11:1 student-faculty ratio, 58% graduation rate (74th percentile nationally), and $71,352 median earnings among graduates.

Stories Behind the Rankings: An Editorial Analysis

Highest Career Payoff

Anna Maria earns this recognition because its $96,877 median earnings are the strongest on the list by a wide margin, landing in the top 3% nationally. That payoff appears closely tied to practical, advancement-oriented fields like fire science, nursing, public safety, and emergency management. However, student reviews we've collected raise some concerns about instructional quality and support. It may depend on what program you choose. Read more student reviews below.

Most Flexible Catholic Learning Model

Marian University - Wisconsin stands out for its MPath model, which gives students multiple pacing options, including monthly starts, seven-week courses, or traditional semester schedules depending on the program. This model also emphasizes visible degree progress and competencies, which can help adult learners see exactly how they are advancing.

Most Established Catholic Online Operation

Saint Leo stands out for its longevity. With 10,796 online students and online education dating back to 1998, it delivers on its Benedictine, Catholic liberal arts mission. The tradeoff is that scale brings inconsistency in the student reviews. While students often praise flexibility and career relevance, there's some recurring frustration with financial aid, billing, and department-level support.

A Jesuit Faculty Member's Take on What Makes Affordable Online Catholic Colleges Worth It

Headshot of Dr. Martin Scanlan (PhD)

Dr. Martin Scanlan (PhD)

Professor at Boston College

Martin Scanlan is a professor at Boston College's Lynch School of Education and Human Development, one of the nation's most respected schools of education housed within a premier Jesuit, Catholic research university. As Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Professional Capital and Community — a role he has held for nearly a decade — Scanlan helps shape the national conversation around how schools can become more welcoming and equitable spaces, particularly for students who have historically been underserved.

What makes an online Catholic college experience distinct from a secular one?

"The mission-focus of Catholic colleges is the primary distinguishing factor. Catholic institutes of higher education tend to be explicitly committed to missions that connect teaching and learning to one's calling in life, or 'vocation.'

The etymology of vocation refers to a 'spiritual calling' or to 'being summoned.' Originally with a religious connotation, the meaning has evolved to apply more broadly to include one's career, profession, and major life decisions (e.g., whether or not to marry).

"Catholic colleges see their mission as supporting students in a process of vocational discernment."

Catholic colleges see their mission as supporting students in a process of vocational discernment. This mission-focus infuses the college experience, from course requirements (e.g., directing students to take courses in philosophy and religious studies) to extra-curricular opportunities and the school's culture (e.g., encouraging students to engage in service learning and retreats)."

What's the biggest myth about attending an online Catholic college?

"Graduate students in our master's program attend online. The biggest myth is that they will not form a sense of community with the faculty, classmates, and institution. We find they do all of these things, and well!"

How does the Catholic intellectual tradition actually show up in coursework?

"The Catholic Intellectual Tradition emphasizes several values, such as:

The dynamism of faith and reason in the search for truth, a conviction that the search for truth is itself a sacred activity,

The openness to mystery and awe,

And a reverence for the dignity of life.

At times these show up in courses explicitly, such as in an ethics class that foregrounds exploring morality and virtue. Other times they are more tangential, such as in a statistics class, where they may appear less in 'how' questions ('How do I calculate standard deviation?') and more in 'why' questions (e.g., 'Why is the choice of variables to include and exclude itself a moral question?')."

Are there any red flags students should watch for when choosing among the most affordable Catholic colleges that are online?

"I am a professor in the business school at our university. I spend a great deal of time talking to perspective students about their goals, interests, and educational desires. My cell phone number is on my email signature. I am always open to talking to prospective students, business majors or others.

The personal touch is so very critical, especially for an online university. If you can’t meet with real people to discuss the programs, student experience, student life, etc. be wary of that online university.

[Also,] one should be on the lookout for online colleges — Catholic or otherwise — that fail to articulate a clear mission and show a consistent commitment to enacting that mission through the student's whole experience (academic and non-academic).

If the institutional commitment to mission is peripheral or tangential, or seems more performative than genuine, I would encourage students to look elsewhere."

What's one piece of advice you'd give a cost-conscious student who is drawn to Catholic higher education but unsure if it's the right fit?

"Visit. There are many opportunities for funding one's experience that only come when you scratch beneath the surface and spend time with people at the place. Visiting helps surface these opportunities. In addition, visiting allows one to move from the general, curated version on the web to the actual version.

And if the college is an online one, 'visiting' means talking directly (not texting or emailing) with actual people who are in it (e.g., current students, alumni, support staff, faculty)."

Dr. Mark Amelang on Why an Online Catholic University Can Outperform Traditional Institutions

Dr. Mark Amelang is a rare combination of seasoned business executive, passionate educator, and dedicated Catholic leader. Why choose an affordable online Catholic university?

"The fundamental difference [of a Catholic college] is the focus on the human person and the dignity of the human person. Typical online education programs can be very ‘hands off’ and transactional.

God’s call for you might be clear or it may not be so clear at the start of your educational journey. Through engaging in the educational process along with the self-discovery process, fostered by professors, advisors, and clergy, you will have the opportunity to realize your true purpose. That is the ultimate benefit of Catholic education.

[To save money,] ask the university about scholarship opportunities, loans, and other ways to finance your education. Be sure to share where you live, as some institutions offer significant discounts for people from specific countries. Try to focus on tuition costs and fees."

Are there misconceptions about attending an online Catholic college?

"The biggest myth about attending an online Catholic college is this: you’ll miss out on the authentic Catholic community as well as academic support a brick and mortar might offer.

At Catholic International University, we ensure this is not the case. We have a dedicated student life department which fosters community within the online environment through online discussions and live events. Many of our students have shared that meeting peers from around the world has broadened their perspective and deepened their understanding of the universal Church."

How is the Catholic faith integrated into college degree programs?

"The Catholic intellectual tradition comes through in every aspect of our university. Approved by the Cardinal Newman Society as 'Authentically Catholic' our coursework is 100% aligned with the teachings of the Magisterium. In addition, 100% of our faculty are practicing Catholics (full and part time). Our courses are rooted in the liberal arts, forming students not just in the skills necessary to perform well in their career, but a worldview which is informed by the Catholic intellectual tradition.

This education offers students the ability to engage the world with full reason and an understanding of the truths which they exist within. So that they may flourish in any career or vocation that they choose."

Is it important to choose a university that was built to be online from the start?

"Many brick and mortar Catholic colleges started offering online courses (and programs) due to the COVID 19 pandemic. After COVID it became apparent to some universities that this was an easy way to expand: The professors did not have to come to campus to teach, and the university could increase student counts in a cost effective manner. But most of these courses are merely in-person courses that are now offered online.

"An advantage of a fully online university is our ability to recruit the best of the best professors, wherever they may be living."

This can be a dangerous issue for students seeking an excellent education in an online format. Students should be on the lookout for a college that is built to be online from scratch.

[An] advantage of a fully online university is our ability to recruit the best of the best professors, wherever they may be living. Most brick and mortar colleges that offer online courses use the professors they have recruited and relocated (if not local) to the on campus area... Learning in this kind of cross-cultural environment leads to an eye opening and rich student experience."

EXPERT TIP

"[A] critical component is to hop on a video call with a professor, advisor, or counselor from the university you are interested in attending. Ask questions and get a real feel of the potential fit. Make sure the university has a program you are interested in (or a couple of programs, ideally)."

How Affordable Online Catholic Colleges Compare to National Tuition Trends

The five schools in the 2026 Most Affordable Online Catholic Colleges ranking show annual in-state tuition ranging from $9,000 to $14,850, or approximately $36,000 to $59,400 total over four years.

Compared to national averages reported by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), these tuition rates fall far below the typical cost of private nonprofit four-year institutions, which averaged $40,700 per year in tuition and fees in the most recent year.

Historically, "private nonprofit college" has been nearly synonymous with high tuition. The affordable online Catholic schools on this list tell a very different story: Despite being private institutions, they are relatively affordable.

Even the highest-priced school here costs less than half of the typical private nonprofit rate, while Avila — at $9,000 annually — comes in nearly 80% lower. Over four years, that difference can translate into six figures in tuition savings alone, before factoring in reduced expenses like housing or commuting that often come with online learning.

The Catholic colleges on the list above are pricing closer to public university rates ($9,800 annually on average) than to their private peers, suggesting that a commitment to online delivery is a cost strategy that passes real savings on to students.

FAQs About Affordable Online Catholic Colleges

Are Online Catholic Colleges Cheaper Than Traditional Catholic Colleges?

Yes, it's true that the online Catholic schools listed above are cheaper than traditional private colleges, as the graphs above indicate. Distance learning at the college level is usually cheaper than campus-based degrees in general. This comes in many forms, from saving on the obvious, like room-and-board and commuting expenses to also sometimes saving on out-of-state tuition since many online degree programs don't discriminate between in-state and out-of-state rates.

Are Online Catholic Colleges Accredited?

There's an easy way to check whether an online Catholic college is accredited or not: Plug the name into the U.S. Department of Education's database. Or you can trust that the OnlineU research team has already done this, verifying every single online school across this site to ensure institutional accreditation.

Accreditation is a really important step that you shouldn't gloss over. It determines whether students can get financial aid, for example, as well as the ability to transfer credits. It also shows an employer that the college has a nationwide stamp of approval in terms of its quality and legitimacy.

What Majors Can You Study at an Online Catholic College?

In general, you can study the same subjects at an online Catholic university as you can with any other online school and at any degree level. It really just depends on the school in question. Explore the list of options above, whether you're interested in business, education, psychology, theology, liberal arts, or other career-focused fields. Not every school offers such a wide breadth of options, so be sure to go to the school websites and explore the degree offerings.

I enjoy the classes and some of the instructors. I only had 1 issue with an instructor, but overall, everything is going great. I would say my Academic advisor is not good. I've only spoken with him once, and I've been attending school for a year now. I have a great go-to person that I speak with anytime I have an issue, feeling stressed or depressed, and need a little advice to help keep me going. And that is Sarah Bessey or Besser, I can't remember her last name, but it's one of those. She is great... Read More

I will say that I am extremely satisfied with my experience so far with the university. I was skeptical about it at first, but once I began classes, it became evident quickly that I was in for a great surprise because I got everything I bargained for and then some. So far, I've not had a bad experience with any of the faculty or otherwise. They are all beyond helpful and its clear that they possess a real passion for their job. CCNY is one of the best colleges in NYC. I had the best experience here, especially at the Center for Worker Education. As a non-traditional student I received all the support that I needed from my professors, the courses were not easy and but still, I could reach out anytime with questions. The college has a lot of resources, including the library, the counseling center, they also have a pantry for students in need, and they host a lot of events and activities. Most the professors are engaging and provide information pertaining to the educational materials, but then there's some professors that don't do a dang thing. Classes are very formulaic, most tend to follow the same formula of a discussion board post and a module called Intellipath every week. The grading seems to be mostly AI/automated, though I may be wrong about that. If you are looking for the typical college experience this isn’t it, but if you need to finish as fast as possible, this might be for you.

I've read the other reviews and I'll just say the online degrees are not for everyone. It's a lot of reading and self teaching. For me this is perfect because I don't like being micromanaged and I can divide my time and learning according to my own schedule (mom of 3 here).
