New Jersey has 87 degree-granting colleges on its soil. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) classifies five of these schools as rural. Most of the rest are in suburbs and some are in urban areas. 

Is College Free in New Jersey?


New Jersey provides four years of free college to qualifying students through a combination of the Community College Opportunity Grant and the Garden State Guarantee. The grant lets students complete two cost-free years at a New Jersey community college, and the guarantee qualifies them for two more free years at a public New Jersey college or university. To be eligible, students must live in households with adjusted gross income under $65,000.
